Transportation Safety Lead - Planning/Engineering | New York, NY | Newark, NJ | Hybrid

VHB's NYC metro team is looking for a Transportation Safety Lead to join our growing Mobility group and support our clients' efforts to save lives and prevent injuries from motor vehicle crashes. VHB's Mobility group in NYC is a leader in the industry, working to improve mobility, enhance communities and economic vitality, and balance development and infrastructure needs with environmental stewardship. The successful candidate will have experience in traffic safety analysis, statistical analysis, transportation planning and roadway design, and project management.

Responsibilities:

    Assist and manage a team of professionals in developing safety solutions which consider all users, including motorists, bicyclists, public transit users and pedestrians of all ages and abilities
  • Develop new project opportunities, manage client relationships, and prepare and manage proposal submissions
  • Provide technical and professional development of staff
  • Monitor project financial performance
  • Attend and lead meetings with agencies, clients, consultant partners, and stakeholders
  • Execute scope associated with transportation planning, operations and/or design, and traffic safety for projects
  • Employ knowledge and experience in a variety of safety related topics, including the Safe System Approach, Safety Data, Highway Safety Manual, Highway Safety Improvement Program/Strategic Highway Safety Plans, Vulnerable Road User Safety Assessments, and Highway Safety Plans
  • Assist public agency clients in identifying and securing funding for safety-related projects through grant writing and proposal support.
  • Participate in professional organizations that promote relationships with clients and teaming partners

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong leadership and project/task management skills
  • Team oriented with the ability to manage multiple assignments and mentor junior staff
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail oriented
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to think critically and strategicallyin solving problems and devising approaches
  • Deep understanding of traffic safety concepts including design and operations
  • Ability to apply statistics to traffic safety
  • Understanding of Vision Zero strategies, state and local safety policies, and federal funding programs like HSIP grants

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in transportation planning, civil engineering or transportation or related field of study required
  • Master's degree a plus and may substitute for 1 year of experience
  • 11-15 years of experience of professional traffic safety planning/engineering experience required
  • AICP or Professional Engineer (PE) license and/or RSP certification for NY and/or NJ (where applicable) greatly preferred

Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in New York City is $130,000-172,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
