Utility Coordinator

Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking a candidate to fill a full time Utility Coordinator position in our Indianapolis, IN office.

Position Profile

This position will work within our Infrastructure Market in the Roadway Discipline on utility coordination activities for state and local roadway and bridge projects. Position requires the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and execute projects for a variety of clients including the Indiana Department of Transportation and local government agencies throughout Indiana. It is important that this position can support project teams from initial planning through design and construction. Projects are likely to include reconstruction or rehabilitation of major interstates and highways, urban and rural roadways as well as bridge rehabilitation or replacement projects. This is a junior to midlevel position geared for professional learning, growth, and responsibility.

A Day in Life of a Utility Coordinator at Hanson

The Utility Coordinator is responsible for all work related to coordinating with utilities on a highway or bridge project. The Utility Coordinator is responsible for initially determining what utility companies are in the project area, then communicating and coordinating with those utilities throughout the project. You will work with INDOT or a local government client, the design team, and all utility companies that have facilities located within the project footprint to determine if conflicts exist between the proposed improvement and utility lines and coordinate the relocation activities.

Here's a snapshot of what you would do in this role:

  • Research utility records and visit project sites to determine presence of utility facilities
  • Send out initial verification, conflict analysis, and work plan request letters
  • Review work plans
  • Attend preliminary and final field check meetings
  • Send approved work plans and notice to proceed to relocating utilities
  • Coordinate utility reimbursement agreements
  • Write the Utility Special Provision and complete the Utility Coordination Certification
  • Upload all required documentation to the Utility Tracking Application
  • Prepare master relocation plan and Gantt chart for utility relocations.

What We're Looking For

We feel the following qualifications would set you up for success in this role:

Technical Skills:

  • Complete understanding of the INDOT Utility Coordination Process and State Statues that govern it
  • Understanding of the INDOT project development process
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans
  • Ability to serve as the Utility Coordinator for multiple projects
  • Ability to use Bluebeam, MicroStation or AutoCAD a plus
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word

Soft Skills:

  • Must be able to communicate technical concepts to engineers, clients, and public stakeholders
  • Must be able to build effective relationships with internal and external client bases
  • Must be able to work independently and as a team member
  • Excellent project team and client-facing communication skills
  • Interest in experiencing a variety of assignments is important

Education/Experience:

  • B.S. in engineering or related field
  • Become INDOT Certified Utility Coordinator within 1 year
  • INDOT Certified Railroad Coordinator, or willingness to obtain Certification a plus
  • Must possess a valid driver's license

Salary range: $75,000 - $120,000
