Position Overview
Facilities Services supports KU's mission of learning, scholarship, and creative endeavor by operating and maintaining the University's physical plant and grounds. The Electrician Senior performs highly skilled tasks in planning, installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of electrical systems, wiring, machines, and equipment. The incumbent may act as a lead worker for less skilled maintenance employees.

Work Schedule: 7:30am-4:00pm, Monday to Friday with overtime and after hours call back as needed. Facilities also offers a four-day 10-hour per day work week option Monday-Thursday or Tuesday to Friday.

Job Description
40% - Wiring: Lays-out, installs and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus and control equipment. Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance and avoid hazardous and unreliable wiring consistent with job specifications and electrical codes. Works from diagrams, job specifications, or blueprints. Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit, using tools such as hacksaw, pipe threader and conduit bender. Pulls wiring through conduit. Splices wire by stripping insulation from terminal leads with knife or pliers, twisting or crimping wires together, and applying tape or terminal caps. Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment using hand tools. Installs and repairs distribution and control apparatus, such as switches, relays, circuit-breaker panels, fastening in place with screws, bolts, etc., using hand and power tools. Connects proper cables to equipment such as motors and installs grounding leads. Tests continuity of circuits to insure electrical compatibility and safety of components, using test equipment such as ohmmeter, ammeter, megger and phase meter, etc. Observes functioning of equipment or electrical systems to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation or replacement.

40% - Electrical Distribution/Equipment: Inspects and tests electrical distribution equipment and wiring outside and inside buildings to verify conformance of installation with construction and building code specification. Examines wires and auxiliary equipment, such as fuses, insulators, and switches to determine conformance to work orders utilizing thorough knowledge of types, sizes and styles of equipment. Compares layout and methods of installation to blueprints and sketches and marks differentiations. Tests lines, transformers, and other distribution equipment using such devices as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and locates cause of electrical disturbance and determines actual electrical load on system. Work requires excellent understanding of voltages range from 24 to 12470 volts. Maintains and repairs mercury-vapor, fluorescent, electric arc or incandescent streetlights. Climbs ladders or stands in tower-truck bucket to reach lamps. Tests circuits and electrical components. Replaces blown fuses and bulbs, faulty transformers, photoelectric timers electrodes and wires. Requires ability to read, comprehend and complete complex written instructions. Shall have extensive knowledge working with 15kv rated distribution systems. Including installing cables, splices cables & terminating cables along with installing 15kv transformers and pad-mount switches. Duties will include maintaining campus 15kv systems, supervising/leading the work of others in this area and inspecting 15kv installation of contractors on campus projects.

15% - Related: Previews, orders and otherwise obtains electrical materials and equipment. Completes work order paperwork. Trains, instructs and otherwise acts as lead worker to other shop personnel. Informs supervisor of work status. Cleans and maintains job sites and tools. Performs related work as necessary. Assigns work in the absence of the shop supervisor. Performs project reviews and participates in collaborative meetings for Facilities Services and Design and Construction Management as needed.

5% - Performs other related work as assigned.

Position Requirements
  1. Reach, grasp, lift, carry, and place moderately heavy loads frequently, and heavy loads occasionally (50 lbs) with or without accommodation.
  2. Work in temperature extremes, both hot and cold inside and outdoors.
  3. Report to work during declared periods of inclement weather.
  4. Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  5. Work overtime as needed.
  6. Must input work order information digitally and perform other electronic communications as required.

Required Qualifications
  1. High School diploma or completion of G.E.D. equivalency.
  2. Three (3) years of journeyman level experience as an electrician; two (2) years of which need to be at the journeyman level installing and/or maintaining 15kv electrical distribution systems. Certificate of completion from a vocational school or an associate's degree in this trade area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  3. Valid driver's license by the time of hire and maintain the license throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated experience reading, interpreting, and working from sketches, blueprints, job specifications, and schematics as evidenced by application materials.
  2. Demonstrated experience with all voltage up to 12470 as evidenced by application materials.
  3. Demonstrated experience working with conduit as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Usage of electrical test equipment as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Previous experience working in a college or university setting.
