Medical Technologist I - Parasitology

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks a Medical Technologist to join the Parasitology laboratory. The Medical Technologist I, reports to the laboratory manager and performs comprehensive parasitology diagnostics, utilizing classic, immunological, and molecular testing methods. This role adheres to AAVLD standards and follows organizational and unit policies and procedures. Additionally, the position also supports the Molecular Diagnostics team by providing backup testing as needed in response to disease outbreaks and staffing shortages.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform routine parasitology testing.
  • Maintain compliance with all related quality assurance and safety standards.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting to resolve test, process, and supply issues.
  • Utilize a wide range of software applications and instrumentation.
  • Perform routine molecular testing methods.

Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, veterinary technology, or a related biological science with up to two years of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience performing classic parasitology methods.
  • Experience with conventional and real-time PCR methods.
  • Working knowledge of quality assurance and compliance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of veterinary testing for the diagnosis of parasitic diseases.
  • Experience performing real-time PCR, sequencing and recombinant techniques.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • This is a full-time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

This position is 39 hours per week. While normal business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, specific schedules may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, University holidays and scheduled breaks.
