About the Department and/or College

The PSS Department is a comprehensive academic unit conducting research and offering coursework and programs in several areas of plant and soil sciences. There are 36 full-time faculty members and a student body consisting of approximately 180 undergraduate and 140 graduate students. B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. level degrees are offered in Plant and Soil Science. Additionally, distance education courses and four certificate programs are offered. The department is research-intensive, while fostering strong teaching expectations and commitments. Students in the department are educated to meet the challenge of using soil, water, and plant resources for sustainable production and environmental quality.

Major/Essential Functions

Primary responsibility will be to provide technical assistance to TeCSIS-TAWC Program conducting in field research at New Deal Farm and demonstrations in producers' plots across west Texas. Adherence to robust safety practices and compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations are responsibilities of all employees.

  • This individual will work with and under the supervision of Dr. Krishna Jagadish at the Texas Tech New Deal Farm supporting research activities.
  • Maintain good working relationship with the Unit Farm Manager, Technical Program Manager, and other research personnel with a permanent station at the Plant and Soil Science, New Deal farm facilities.
  • Research, sample, and data collection as required for program objectives, working alongside students, post docs and visiting scholars.
  • Lead in all field operations related to repairs, maintenance, fertilizer, chemical applications, irrigation, and harvesting.
  • Specifically assist in the service, repair, monitoring and maintenance of all irrigation wells, controllers, drip tapes and valves used for irrigation that are utilized by the team's research personnel.
  • Provide field level maintenance and oversight of all research areas through the use, maintenance, and service of 100+ HP tractors (up to 225 HP) and equipment required in tillage, chemical applications, planting, harvesting and routine cleaning of fences, facilities and field acreages.
  • Assist in data collection, equipment installation, crop monitoring etc. on New Deal Farm and different producer fields under the Davis College Water Center-TAWC program.
  • This position requires the individual to work outside in inclement weather including hot summer days and cold winter days.
  • Communicate farm status and conditions to other team members and leadership frequently utilizing weekly and monthly reports, WhatsApp and other technologies.
  • Make presentations to management and team members.
  • Effectively make and execute plans to ensure that farming operations are completed timely.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree plus three years supervisory experience; OR a combination of education and/or supervisory experience to equal seven years.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with previous farming experience dealing with equipment, irrigation and sorghum and cotton-based systems preferred.
