Job Summary
Reporting to the Bioscience Core Manager and under the technical direction of the Faculty Advisory Committee, the Genome Center is seeking a full-time Research Scientist. The Research Scientist is responsible for managing all aspects of the Genome Center, including but not limited to preparing various samples for sequencing services of NGS and Sanger sequencing, maintaining laboratory equipment and records, providing guidance, and being a resource to users of the research core facilities, and support research activities utilizing other bioscience cores as needed. The incumbent will serve as an expert consultant to the users of the Genome Center regarding the technical details of the Next-Generation Sequencing and Sanger sequencing.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Master's degree in field directly related to research - Two (2) years of experience/expertise performing research relating to a specified field of study - Or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience totaling at least eight years.
Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience operating an Illumina sequencing platform and library preparation.
  • Experience operating a Sanger sequencing platform.
  • Experience performing single-cell sequencing and/or spatial transcriptomics.
  • Previous working experiences in core laboratories.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Equipment Operation and Maintenance:

  • Operate NGS and Sanger sequencing bench-top sequencers.
  • Perform instrument maintenance as scheduled and troubleshoot as required.


Expertise and Specialization:

  • Apply molecular biology skills to perform Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) library preparation, single-cell analysis, spatial transcriptomics, and other services as assigned.
  • Maintain detailed and well-organized records of protocols performed and results obtained.
  • Assist in the development and design of new Genome Center service protocols. Write and update SOPs as required.
  • Adapt the latest technologies in genomics to develop and design new Genome center services. Write and update SOPs as required.

Training:
  • Train students and other lab members as assigned.
Customer Service (Service Cores):

  • Follow Core guidelines regarding order processing.
  • Interact with client user groups and participate in project consultations.
  • Alert supervisor to problems/concerns.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and customer service skills are essential.
