What you'll do

Viasat is looking for a Project Engineer who is passionate about Cyber Security and is driven to join us in protecting and defending our connected world! The ideal candidate will have a background in Cyber Security with Software or Programmable Logic experience that has progressed into a leadership role after working as a hands-on developer for the first phase of your career.


The day-to-day

Development and certification of the Modern Key Loader (MKL) as a Standalone End Cryptographic Unit (ECU) for protection and distribution of keys at TOP SECRET and Below level.

  • Project engineer leads all aspects of the design, development, production, testing, and maintenance of complex systems or products.
    Works with multi-functional teams (Systems, Software, Hardware, Firmware, Mechanical, Security and Operations) to evaluate the design.
  • Serve as "the" technical resource to interdisciplinary teams and management.
  • Technically drive proposals, whitepapers, and customer support.
  • Oversee and guide development, testing, system performance, environmental and system troubleshooting.
  • Support planning the development activities.
  • Perform technical design and code reviews.
  • Mentor and coach junior engineers.
  • Define security, performance, product requirements and work with validation lab supporting engineering validation/verification product testing.
  • Drive execution of objectives including code reviews, test data analysis, investigate new target platforms, deadlines, schedule and team development.
  • Understand hardware, software, firmware interactions, and collaborate with hardware, software, firmware, mechanical, test and security engineers.
  • Champion requirements decomposition, allocation and integration on target with hardware, software, firmware mechanical, test and security engineers.
  • Maintain and improve existing designs and source code to help attain the goal of a modular structure.
  • Push augmentation of existing security architectures and creation of new ones to advance the state of the art through trade study analysis.
  • Embrace the implementation of new tools and processes that extend design-development-test automation.
  • Lead investigations into root cause analysis of hardware, software and firmware defects and resolve the defects.

What you'll need

  • Bachelor's or Graduate's Degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or computer science with 15 years of hands-on design, development, integration and successful verification experience.
  • Substantial and proven experience in High Assurance Architectures, design and Product lifecycles.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving capabilities.
  • Comfortable with debugging, unit testing, emulation, and logic analyzer.
  • Fluent in writing protocols and firmware development practices and comfortable working with a variety of operating systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills at a technical and business user level.
  • Experience supporting technical proposal efforts including requirements decomposition and verification techniques, architectural design, product definition and description as well as estimation.
  • United States Citizenship required.
  • The ability to obtain a DoD SECRET clearance.
  • Ability to travel 10% (domestically or internationally).

Salary range

$155,500.00 - $221,500.00 / annually.
For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $188,500.00- $255,500.00/ annually
