Position Summary |
This position will report to the Grounds Department of Campus Operations. Primary responsibilities include working with a team of individuals in maintaining University properties. This position will assist in providing leadership to small crews and inspection of grounds work in a geographical area of campus. The Grounds Team Leader reports daily to the grounds supervisor regarding work accomplished and future teamwork required.
The Grounds Team Leader - Equipment Specialist must be proficient in the use of a wide range of machinery utilized in all aspects of grounds department responsibility. This position will participate in landscape construction, as well as hardscape construction. The equipment specialist will be called upon to utilize heavy equipment during maintenance and landscape construction projects campus wide.
In addition, this position will be responsible for all maintenance of a geographical area of campus including: pruning, weeding, pest control, planting of trees, shrubs, and perennials, mulching, fertilizing, and all aspects of maintaining trees, shrubs, and herbaceous perennials, mowing, weed-eating, snow removal, litter removal, and road/parking lot maintenance. Because of the extent of duties, an Agricultural/ Horticultural Specialist at
UNC Asheville must be both knowledgeable and self-motivated. Each Agricultural/Horticultural Specialist must be an independent worker, and must be extremely capable and responsible. |

Minimum Education/Experience/Skills |
High school diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: North Carolina Pesticide License may be required and can be obtained within six months of employment; North Carolina Commercial Driver's License may be required. |
Preferred Education/Experience/Skills |
The following Education, Experience and Skills are preferred but not a requirement:
- Experience in large-scale landscape installation and maintenance, with a focus on operating heavy equipment such as backhoes, skid steers, excavators, and truck and trailer hauling.
- Proficiency in utilizing all equipment involved in large-scale grounds maintenance, including bucket trucks, front-end loaders, and chainsaws.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in managing small teams, with strong communication skills.
- Effective time management abilities to prioritize daily tasks for oneself and others, ensuring a high-quality environment for the campus community.
- Advanced knowledge of grounds maintenance and landscape construction is preferred.

Work Schedule and Hours |
Typical hours will vary between Monday-Friday from 7am-4pm and Tuesday -Saturday from 7am-4pm. Some evening and weekend hours may be needed to meet the needs of the department, winter weather, or during special events. The employee in this position is identified as critical personnel in accordance with
UNC Asheville policy. |
