JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Center for Critical Minerals (http://C2M.psu.edu) in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State invites applications for a full-time 48-week Assistant Research Professor position to conduct cutting-edge research in the extraction of critical minerals, including rare earth elements from primary and secondary sources through geological characterization, physical beneficiation, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy in collaboration other faculty members associated with the Center. The Center is building a pilot-scale critical mineral recovery test facility. Successful candidates report to and work with the Center for Critical Minerals director. This position and work will be performed at the University Park campus.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting world-class research involving geological characterization, mineral processing, and hydro/pyrometallurgical processes; Experience in developing novel separation methodologies employing membrane and impregnated resin to separate and purify metal ions from various primary, and secondary resources desirable. Working with pilot-scale research operations is a plus.

  • Aiding to supervise and coordinate undergraduate and graduate researchers.

  • Assisting in writing research proposals and helping manage research projects.

  • Documenting research findings in reports and referred journals.

  • Working on related new research initiatives.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. by appointment start date in engineering or a related discipline. Candidates should have at least four years of relevant post-PhD research experience, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and be able to work in teams to coordinate the research efforts for the Director of the Center.
