Division: Engineering Status: Non-Exempt Job Code: 639 Reports To: Program Manager, Planning and Asset Management Date: 11-01-24 Revised Date: 12-12-24 Last Reviewed Date: 12-12-24 SUMMARY OF JOB The Engineering Intern will support the Engineering Services divisions by assisting with technical and analytical tasks critical to the utility's infrastructure projects. This role offers hands-on experience in water and wastewater engineering, providing the opportunity to apply academic knowledge to real-world projects within a collaborative environment. The Engineering Intern will work under the guidance of experienced engineers, project managers, and other utility professionals, developing skills essential for a career in water resources, environmental engineering, and asset management. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Includes the following. Other duties may be assigned or scheduled. * Support engineering and project management tasks for ongoing infrastructure projects, including data collection, analysis, and documentation. * Assist in preparing technical reports, memos, and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders. * Participate in site visits and fieldwork activities to gain an understanding of water and wastewater facilities, distribution systems, and asset condition assessments. * Gather and organize data related to water distribution, wastewater collection system, asset conditions, and system performance metrics. * Conduct preliminary data analysis to support master planning, asset management, and hydraulic modeling initiatives. * Utilize GIS software, asset management databases, and hydraulic modeling tools under supervision to analyze system data. * Support design and planning efforts for infrastructure upgrades, replacements, and maintenance projects. * Collaborate with engineers to review design plans, engineering specifications, and regulatory requirements to ensure project compliance and alignment with utility standards. * Conduct research on emerging water industry trends, technology, and best practices related to asset management, sustainable infrastructure, and water quality management. * Prepare summaries, presentations, and reports on research findings to inform project planning and innovation initiatives. * Assist in compiling project documentation, creating charts and graphs, and preparing visual aids for team meetings and presentations. * Work with operations, maintenance, and environmental teams to understand the practical applications of engineering principles in daily water utility operations. * Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities to enhance understanding of utility operations and asset management. * No more than 40 hours per week and no more than 1040 hours per year. Hours defined by Divisional management team. * No benefits. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE * Prefer current enrollment in Bachelor's degree program in Engineering from an ABET- accredited university. * Must be currently enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate program in related engineering field. CERTIFICATE, LICENSE, REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS * Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license. No more than six (6) demerit points on driving record if required to drive Water Authority vehicles. If corrective lenses are noted on driver's license, the lenses must be worn when operating Authority vehicles. * Repetitive movement using keyboard and/or office equipment is involved. * Employee must be able to sit for an extended amount of time at a desk or workstation. * While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, climb, balance or crawl. * Employee must be able to stand for an extended amount of time at the jobsite. * Employee must be physically able to walk several miles during the day. * Employee must be physically able to regularly reach overhead. * Employee must regularly lift, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally 100 pounds. Assistance is required on weight amounts above those listed. Failure to do so could result in injury and denied Worker's Compensation benefits.
