Job Summary

Duration through 1/31/25; strong possibility of extension.

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) receives daily assignments and functions under the supervision of the Registered Nurse to carry out direct patient care responsibilities. All patient care team members act to meet patient needs and learn new skills to achieve quality patient care and customer service. Team members promote a cooperative working relationship with each other, other staff, and the public by facilitating and enhancing communication, displaying honesty and respect, displaying sensitivity to age specific needs and cultural differences, and expressing and accepting feedback in a professional manner.

The Surgical Attendant maintains a clean environment within the operating rooms, support space, office space, lounges, hallways, and PACU/Preoperative Holding Area. The Surgical Attendant also restocks and makes available surgery supplies and equipment, transports patients to and from Surgery, runs errands, and otherwise assists the Surgery clinical staff, as needed.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • OR experience
  • Ability to work effectively within a team
  • Ability to satisfactorily perform job duties as defined in the job description
  • Willingness to be taught/learn new skills
  • Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (addition and subtraction)
  • Ability to organize and effectively set priorities
  • Ability to carry out duties of first responder in emergency situations
  • Successful completion of Medical Center Patient Care Assistant training
  • Basic computer skills
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification

Preferred Qualifications


  • Certified Nursing Assistant
  • Previous PCA / Nursing Assistant experience in an acute care setting
  • Current nursing student who has completed a Medical Surgical rotation
  • Knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to the responsibilities of the job

License/Certification

American Heart Association BLS certification
