Summary

The Counseling Center, located in the Driehaus Center, is part of the Student Life division and an integral partner in the University's health and wellness initiatives. The Center seeks a talented and enthusiastic individual to serve as staff Counselor with a specific focus on serving minoritized students and who will provide leadership in the ongoing development and implementation of culturally inclusive and innovative mental-health outreach. We are searching for an ethically sound and knowledgeable individual.

This candidate will be part of a collaborative team of professionals at the University's Counseling Center. The primary responsibilities will be to provide counseling services (individual and group) to undergraduate and graduate students, along with designing and participating in outreach programs for the university community. Clinical supervision will be provided by the Director of Counseling in the Counseling Center.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide personal counseling (individual and group) to students, including assessment, diagnosis, short-term treatment and crisis intervention.
  • Provide services and maintain records according to Counseling Center policies and procedures and the Code of Ethics/Standards of Practice of the American Counseling Association.
  • Develop and conduct outreach programs for mental-health issues.
  • Assist Director and other counselors with case management for behavioral, well-being and Title IX concerns with the Dean of Students, Health Center, Residence Life, Campus Ministry and other units as needed.
  • Coordinate support for historically under-served student populations including: BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) and/or international students as a liaison with the Office of Inclusive Excellence.
  • Ensure proper record keeping and reporting in accordance with appropriate professional standards.
  • Maintain knowledge of and engage in appropriate training for counseling best practices and to maintain licensure.
  • Establish strong collaborative relationships with SXU faculty and administrative departments.
  • Maintain listing of local mental health resources and make referrals for off-campus treatment.
  • Participate in Student Life special events and serve on appropriate University committees.
  • Organize and distribute psychoeducational literature and awareness tables.
  • Attend weekly staffing for the Counseling Center.
  • Participate in rotation of Counseling Center on-call emergency phone.
  • Work occasional evening and weekend hours; both for counseling events and in support of other student-focused programs, awards ceremonies, commencements, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling, psychology, social work or related clinical degree
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC, LSW) in state of IL, or have successfully completed the NCE
  • Bilingual in Spanish strongly preferred
  • 1-2 years' experience as a counselor required, experience in a in higher education setting preferred
  • Recent licensed individuals with relevant work experience are welcome to apply
  • Word processing and PC literacy; knowledge of electronic medical record software preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with clinical documentation and Brief Therapy Modality
  • Excellent organization/time management skills, written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic and identity backgrounds, particularly minorities or other traditionally underserved students
  • Understanding of and appreciation for the University's Catholic, Mercy heritage and values
