The Physics and Astronomy Department at the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences is currently accepting applications for Research Assistant to conduct research in Soft Matter.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The Research Assistant will characterize the optical properties of liquid crystal defects.
  • The Research Assistant will support the PI in carrying out the "departing investigator checklist" relative to disposal of chemicals and equipment.

General Responsibilities

  • Perform a series of measurements of liquid crystal defect at various temperatures, to measure and assess their ability to focus light and their focal length.
  • Produce a graph summarizing these measurements, which will be added to an existing manuscript.
  • Carry out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision and seek clarification when needed.
  • Sort out all chemicals in the lab, dispose of the unusable/old ones and update the catalog of the ones in use.
  • Help coordinating the assessment of the microscopes' value.
  • Ensure that all data in the lab computers are saved and secure.
  • Attend regular research weekly meetings with the PI.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD or MS in relevant field preferred.
  • Experience in optical microscopy.
  • Experience in liquid crystals research.

Starting Salary Range: $17.20 - $30.30 HRLY (Commensurate with experience)
Employee group: Limited
Schedule: Monday- Friday, 10 am -6 pm 37.5 hours a week
