What you'll do:
The Automation Applications Engineer III's role is that of a supporting contributor to the engineering team's success. You will have the exciting job of aiding the architect, design, and detail automation control systems, then initialize, configure, integrate, and test, as well as download and trouble shoot programs. Automation controls components consist of servo and stepper motion systems, robots, vision systems, sensors, IIOT modules, safety, programmable logic controllers (PLC), and industrial PC's. This position requires engineering knowledge of these systems, their electrical connectivity, communication protocols, and purpose within the automation ecosystem. The preferred candidate will have experience in the design and build of electrical controls systems, programming and troubleshooting listed components above, and the ability to quickly learn new automation components. This position supports design through manufacturing, factory acceptance, and occasional onsite installation.

Additionally, the Automation Applications Engineer III position requires a working knowledge of the automation mechanical elements e.g. ball and linear bearings, belts and pulleys, lead screws, gear-drives, grippers, vision lighting and lensing, etc.

Additional details about what you will be doing includes:

  • Design and detail control systems that meet the project architecture and specifications while maintaining UL508a standards.
    • Use Mechanical CAD (SolidWorks Mechanical) to design and draft the electrical cabinet mechanical layout.
    • Use Electrical CAD (SolidWorks Electrical) to design and draft the electrical schematic.
  • Set up and execute specific application tests for sales engineers to prove the capabilities of one or more of the automation controls components.
  • Troubleshoot control system errors, sub-system errors and full system errors.
  • Provide technical support for the Sales Engineers, Applications Technicians and build technicians as needed.
  • Support system installations, on site commissioning and general field support.
  • 30% travel is required for this position, but is subject to change based on the customers need.

Requirements:

  • Mechanical/Electrical/Software/Mechatronics Engineering degree or equivalent 4-year degree in a technical field.
  • 7-10 years of relevant automation controls design experience required.
  • Experience in Product Data Management (i.e., SWPDM), ERP (i.e., SAP, Syspro), CAD (i.e., SolidWorks Mechanical and Electrical).
  • Computer literacy and Microsoft Office experience is a must.
  • Experience with mechatronics (i.e., sensors, vision, motion control, plc, robotics).
  • Proven understanding of automation controls (i.e., electrical schematics, automation control panels).
  • Command of UL508A standards.
  • Understanding of Six Sigma process control and design for Six Sigma.
  • Proven trouble shooting skills and methodology.
  • Understanding principles of software code, component application code, scrip language, PLC, and C sharp; (robot, vision programing) is a plus.
