POSITION DESCRIPTION

The individual will lead packaging sustainability development programs aligned to the corporate sustainability pillars, working closely with external converters and technology suppliers on projects from initiation through manufacturing feasibility. Projects will consist of modifications of packaging for existing products as well as the packaging for new products to ensure delivery of environmentally and sustainable formats.

  • Sustainability compliance falls under the position, so a background in packaging legislative and regulatory changes is required.

  • The individual will help shape the development of integrated reporting data analytical assessments working to bring specification data from our businesses not currently on the Agile specification system, into the system, structuring the Bill of Materials and data completeness to allow meaningful reporting though systems data review.

  • The role has responsibility for collation and construction of non-SAP driven Agile data specifications, working closely with our Waterpik and UK business teams, to bring data into the system for sustainability reporting data analytics.

  • Coordination of sustainability qualification programs for new designs and materials to assess feasibility and impact potential. The individual will need to find solutions to problems, manage multiple priorities and expectations, and deliver to those expectations.

  • Be a key member in building on domestic and global reporting for legislative, corporate and customer sustainability targets.

  • Supporting the development and ongoing maintenance of a global packaging materials sustainability check list, for use on all new global packaging programs, as a guide to design for sustainability and compliance to global regulations.

  • Work alongside our International teams to drive programs to lower environmental impact solutions .

  • Work with business teams to assess Lifecycle Analysis impact and support the drive to sustainable future packaging formats.

  • Liaison with key sustainability organizations, representing company, helping to drive approaches for corporate sustainability.

  • To maintain awareness of both domestic and international legislation changes affecting materials compliance

  • In addition to working within cross-functional teams, the individual will also work closely with quality, finance, procurement, regulatory, engineering, operations, consultants and outside vendors.

POSITION ACTIVITIES

  • Ensuring all EPR regulatory compliance standards are kept up to date, to allow accurate reporting through the year.

  • Be a point person for Church and Dwight with key external organizations supporting our EPR activities.

  • Conduct Packaging LCA analytics for assessment of environmental impact with packaging changes.

  • Review legislative and regulatory changes in required packaging sustainability requirements.

  • Generation and execution of test plans and reports.

  • Provide expertise and support to the packaging team in assessment of material recyclability status, in line with the APR and H2R guidelines and standards in the USA, and equivalent agencies globally.

  • Work with independent laboratories or facilities to test materials for recyclability.

  • Participate in governmental policy reviews and membership organization meetings supporting our sustainability and End Producer Responsibility goals.

  • Input into sustainability reports and liaison with Corporate Sustainability Stewardship for key customers and Non-Government Organizations on our sustainability scorecards.

  • Creation and driving of project timelines and build of roadmaps targeting progress against sustainability goals.

  • Coordination and completion of qualification programs for new sustainable package designs, technologies and materials

  • Assess and recommend feasibility of new technologies or materials to improve our sustainability footprint.

  • Travel to vendor and manufacturing locations for support of packaging project activities.

  • Hands-on evaluation of packaging for conformance to project requirements. These activities can occur in warehouses, at suppliers and in packaging laboratory studies.

  • Working alongside Packaging Technicians or Packaging Engineers in the delivery of sustainability projects and qualifications.

  • Generation of new sustainable ideas and development of sustainable concepts to proof of principle through the R&D Futureworks program.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • The successful candidate should have a minimum of 5 years of experience in package development, device or hard goods manufacturing. A preference will be towards candidates that have experience in "consumer goods" packaging areas

  • BS degree in Package Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Engineering sciences.

The candidate's experience must clearly demonstrate experience in many of the following areas:

  • Experience in primary through tertiary packaging development for new product launches

  • Management of projects and project teams towards commercialization of new products.

  • Coordination and completion of qualification programs for new package designs and materials

  • Understanding of the essentials of sustainability, and a solid background of the latest technologies in sustainability, guidelines and policies for packaging recyclability and awareness of NGO's driving industry change.

  • Understanding of LCA metrics, sustainability metrics and reporting

  • Fully developed skills in project management and experienced, cross-functional interactions

  • Understanding of SPC and DOE (design of experiments) and development of component specifications

  • Experience in FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis)

  • Experience across an array of packaging materials / converting methods:

  • Corrugated containers

  • Folding cartons (solid fiberboard)

  • Plastic bottles and injection molded components

  • Flexible film

OTHER SKILLS NEEDED
  • Clear ability to organize and prioritize a number of Packaging projects

  • Data savvy skills on understanding build of specifications

  • High interpersonal skills to influence partner functions within project team environment

  • Strong communication and presentation skills across the organization at multiple levels

  • A self-motivated and proactive personality with ambitions to "learn and deliver" within a fast paced, "employee empowered" atmosphere.

  • Passion for sustainability and environmental impact.

  • High competency in Microsoft applications and general computer usage.
