Educational Specialist II - Gifted & Advanced Learning

Provides professional support and direct assistance exclusively to all schools offering Advanced Placement (AP) and Pre-AP courses as a part of City Schools' expansion of AP programming across all high schools and select middle schools. Directly assists schools to ensure that AP and Pre-AP teachers are formally trained prior to teaching AP/Pre-AP courses and collaborates with content leads within Teaching & Learning to make sure that ongoing professional learning is made available to those teachers in a regular and sustained manner. Consults with schools to help manage their individual AP Program Plans - adding of courses, material needs, planning for teacher recruitment - along with scheduling and participating in annual visits to all AP and Pre-AP classes for observation by the GAL coordinator and content leads from the district office. Manages the preparation for the AP Summer Academy annually inclusive of teacher and student recruitment. Collaborates with the other Educational Specialists in the Gifted and Advanced Learning office to guarantee that best practices in gifted education are incorporated in AP and Pre-AP classes and works to expand AP and Pre-AP access to students who have been traditionally excluded from these courses.


Essential Functions



  • Provides support directly to high school administrators, AP Coordinators, and AP/Pre-AP teachers.
  • Advocates for access to AP and Pre-AP courses for traditionally underserved students to make overall enrollment in these courses more equitable and more diverse.
  • Manages the annual registration of AP and Pre-AP teachers in formal training provided locally at Goucher's AP Summer Institute.
  • Manges the AP Summer Academy preparation and implementation process.
  • Collaborates with content leads within Teaching & Learning to ensure that honors, Pre-AP, and AP professional learning opportunities are provided throughout the academic year.
  • Manages the purchase of AP and Pre-AP materials using district level funds.
  • Participates in the evaluation and selection of instructional materials.
  • Coordinates visits to all AP and Pre-AP classes throughout the year as part of the AP teacher endorsement process.
  • Ensures timeline compliance by school AP Coordinators - course audit submission, course enrollments, AP Classroom platform activation, exam ordering, and fee reduction submissions.
  • Participates in the formal identification process of gifted and advanced learners in high school in alignment with COMAR and district guidelines.
  • Researches and recommends gifted and advanced learning instructional techniques and best practices specific to secondary education students.
  • Collaborates with educators in multiple disciplines to identify and develop differentiation and intervention strategies.
  • Remains current of City Schools' standards for quality instruction and student performance and assists AP/Pre-AP teachers and administrators in developing goals and strategies to meet those standards.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school boards policies and the professional standards.

Desired Qualifications



  • Master's degree in education or a related field. Degree must be from an accredited college or institution.
  • Maryland State Department of Education Advanced Professional Certificate with Administrator I endorsement.
  • Valid Maryland State Department of Education Gifted and Talented Education Specialist certification - or an equivalent endorsement in Gifted from another state - preferred.
  • Three years teaching experience at the Secondary level including experiences with AP/Pre-AP students or gifted students.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver professional development.
  • Knowledge of standards and current curriculum framework and of current "best practices" in curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to make persuasive presentations.
  • Interpersonal skills that ensure effective teambuilding and understanding for the team process.
  • Skilled in interpreting, understanding, and applying data.
  • Ability to provide training and instruction to teachers, staff, and administrators.
  • Proficient in the knowledge and use of technical computer applications.
