The Ohio Turnpike & Infrastructure Commission is seeking an experienced MW Class IV-A Section Mechanic to work in our Maintenance Department at the Boston Maintenance Building in Richfield, OH. Examples of Duties

Job Duties:

  • Performs computer diagnosis using appropriate manufacturer software in order to repair or diagnose truck, vehicle, or equipment problems.
  • Performs repair of electrical systems; diagnoses electrical issues using experience, manuals and/or manufacturer computer software. As such, must be knowledgeable of electrical equipment; be able to read diagrams and understanding wiring.
  • Performs mechanical repairs on equipment ranging from portable power tools to heavy construction equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, chain saws, concrete saws, lawn tractors, light, medium and heavy trucks, loaders, backhoes, excavators, and sewer trucks etc.
  • This may include, but is not limited to, work on engines, transmissions, drive line, differential, steering, fuel systems, exhaust systems, fuel injection components, and air conditioning systems etc.
  • Performs hydraulic repairs, including repairing and/or rebuilding pumps, hoses, and motors control valves and/or solenoid valves and seals/gaskets. Must be able to read diagrams and be able to diagnose and test hydraulic equipment to determine malfunctioning.
  • Performs maintenance and repair of diesel and natural gas-powered stand-by generators.
  • Performs welding duties as needed, such as welding broken pieces on equipment that are too big or too expense to replace. May be required to fabricate parts.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on trucks, vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to, changing oil, filters, belts, and other normal maintenance items. Changes and rotates tires, installs brakes.
  • Performs service calls, gets mileage and hours for each truck and vehicle and schedules maintenance accordingly.
  • Performs repair and/or maintains a variety of lighting and sign systems, such as the
message board used with the truck-mounted attenuator (TMA).
  • Performs various winterization and spring preparation duties, such as calibrating snow and ice equipment; maintaining and repairing salt conveyers and power units, ensuring mowing equipment, joint sealer and hydro seeder are in good, working order.
  • Orders parts and supplies; maintains log of purchases and inventory.

Work Characteristics:
  • Must have knowledge of auto and truck mechanics; diagnostic test equipment.
  • Safety practices associated with repair of vehicles and/or equipment; agency policies and procedures*.
  • Skill in operating hand and power tools related to repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to understand system of mechanical procedures.
  • Work alone on most tasks
  • Stand, walk or bend continuously; lift and carry 40 pounds frequently and 80 pounds occasionally.
  • Use mechanical equipment; radio and telephone communications*. (*) Developed after employment

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience and applicable training in vehicle repair and maintenance of variety of mechanical equipment from small engine powered tools to heavy-duty trucks and construction type equipment.
  • Must possess ASE certifications (T2-T4) and a valid Class "B" CDL with a tanker endorsement.
  • Previous experience in stand-by generators - both diesel and gas-powered is also required.
  • Previous welding experience desirable.
  • Must possess own tools including toolbox, all tools, up to 1 inch, that are required to perform mechanical repair, removal, and installation of the above-described mechanical duties.
