Introduction

ASML US, LP brings together the most creative minds in science and technology to develop lithography machines that are key to producing faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient microchips. We design, develop, integrate, market and service these advanced machines, which enable our customers - the world's leading chipmakers - to reduce the size and increase the functionality of their microchips, which in turn leads to smaller, more powerful consumer electronics. Our headquarters are in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, and we have 18 office locations around the United States including main offices in Wilton, CT, Chandler, AZ, San Jose, CA and San Diego, CA.

Job Mission

We are presenting you with a unique and exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and innovative technology development team, focused on conceiving and demonstrating the technologies that define the next generations of our extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light sources. Based on a laser-produced plasma (LPP), our light source employs a wide range of unique and challenging technologies including laser light amplification, high-power optical systems, plasma generation, as well as sensing and control of the EUV generation process. You are invited to bring your passion, knowledge and expertise in areas of plasma physics, metrology, optics, controls, lasers, and experiment design to push the boundaries of these technologies forward.

In this role, you will join the pathfinding and innovation effort towards advancing the heart of the EUV source: the radiation emitting plasma. A key performance metric for our EUV source, aside from overall power output, is the stability of the power delivered to the wafer during the photolithography process. Not only do we need to ensure we meet stringent stability specifications, we also need to minimize the power margin used in real-time control of EUV power. As an EUV plasma scientist, you will be developing the technologies necessary to improve both EUV power output and stability. Furthermore, you will also be employing your curiosity and creativity to explore novel processes for reducing the cost of technology and ownership of our future products. As a part of our team, you will have the opportunity to carry your innovation from ideation, to implementation, and then to demonstration on an EUV source. As a part of this work, you will utilize various research methodologies such as developing models of the physical process, building prototypes, carrying out experiments on benchtops and research EUV sources, and applying critical thinking skills in analyzing data, i.e. through machine learning algorithms to identify and connect data patterns, etc., and troubleshooting issues.
If you like challenges and exploring new technologies, and you want to help bring the next generation of semiconductor technology to the world, start your adventure and make your vision come true by joining us at ASML.

Role and responsibilities

  • Drive the development of an architecture delivering improved EUV power with a focus on stability and reduced power margin requirements

  • Design and lead the execution of EUV experiments on the EUV source to demonstrate novel technology, test hypotheses of the EUV generation process and its underlaying physics

  • Analyze acquired experimental data and visualize key performance indicators, employ advanced methodology such as machine-learning algorithms to identify patterns to improve EUV stability

  • Provide input to technology roadmaps, identify key scientific learning objectives, and define corresponding experimental design to arrive at design guidelines, performance requirements, and procedures to product teams

  • Demonstrate system-wide performance targets to meet the future technology roadmap requirements

  • Troubleshoot issues with lasers, control and optical systems in order to improve the EUV generation process

  • Document discoveries / experimental results, and communicate knowledge to engineering and product development teams to guide product improvement and release of new product nodes

  • Work independently and in teams to deliver on a stated objective, whether it be the pursuit of new knowledge, the demonstration of a new capability, or the characterization of existing performance

  • Model a speak-up and safety culture fostering the innovative spirit of research

Education and experience

  • PhD with 0 years of relevant experience or MS degree with a minimum of 4+ years of relevant experience in physics, electrical or control engineering, data science, or an equivalent field

  • Understanding of solid-state physics, engineering and control

  • Understanding of scientific research methods and strong scientific curiosity

  • Extensive experience with experiment control, data analysis and development of data analysis tools with, for instance, Matlab, Python or C++, and data acquisition systems such as NI Labview

  • Affinity to analyze large data sets using machine and data-driven learning methods

  • Hands-on experience with complex system design and build, experimentation, characterization, and troubleshooting

  • Hands-on experience with breadboard laser and optical system design, alignment, and performance characterization

  • Practical experience within the space of metrology techniques and metrology development for necessary data acquisition and characterization of plasma phenomena

  • The successful candidate will not only have excelled in their technical field, but will have demonstrated inter-personal and communications strengths

  • Ability to clearly and logically communicate ideas and knowledge to various audiences

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a part of a team and lead investigation and research efforts involving multiple stakeholders and constraints
