Job Summary

Under general supervision, the incumbent is responsible for independently triaging, accessioning, and handing off Surgical Pathology specimens. Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance tasks, maintenance, and helps maintain processing instrumentation for safety and compliance purposes. This position provides support to the Pathologists' Assistants and Pathologists. Handles day to day bench related problems with little supervision. Is a liaison for the department when the Pathologists' Assistants, The Anatomic Pathology Manager, or Pathologist is not available. May be asked to provide backup and support coverage to all other areas of Anatomic Pathology (OMC Surgical Pathology Gross Room, Cytology, Histology, and Decedent Affairs).

Essential Functions:
  • Surgical Pathology Specimen Accessioning and Processing including proper labeling, handling preservation, transportation, storage and disposal of specimens. (35%)
  • Responsible for triage and organization of Surgical Pathology specimens to assist Pathologists' Assistants in the execution of daily work to ensure consistent turnaround times and to meet cut-off times. (15%)
  • Responsible for reagent and instrument maintenance. (10%)
  • Responsible for maintenance and cleaning of the Gross Room space to assist in maintaining an environment of safety. (10%)
  • Performs instrument quality control, preventative maintenance and environmental controls. (10%)
  • Acts as a liaison between the Surgical Pathology department and outside clinical teams. may handle questions regarding collection methods and other clinical details needed to improve specimen quality. (5%)
  • May provide to provide general assistance in the Decedent Affairs Office, Histology and Cytology as needed. (5%)
  • Assist in specialized collections and processing for procedures like bone marrows, frozen sections, renal adequacy, etc. (5%)
  • Is compliant with all safety, life safety, regulatory and infection control procedures. (5%)

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED Required

Work Experience:
  • 1-3 years As a laboratory technician in a hospital/medical or research laboratory. Surgical pathology, histology or cytology laboratory experience preferred. Required

Licenses:

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Basic understanding of Histopathology/Surgical Pathology techniques and Ancillary Testing (flow cytometry, cytogenetics, electron microscopy, special stains, immunohistochemistry, etc.)
    • General knowledge of specimen sources and surgical procedures to accurately perform accessioning.
    • Familiar with regulatory compliance in Quality Control (QC) and competency requirements.
    • Knowledge of Surgical Pathology coding.
    • Ability to troubleshoot testing, equipment, and quality issues relative to testing in the area of oversight.
    • Excellent organizational skills and detail-oriented work relative to completing ancillary testing paperwork, accessioning, and handling specimens for processing and testing.
    • Ability to work professionally with patients and coworkers.
    • Knowledge of laboratory terminology and equipment.
    • Good communication and customer relation skills.
    • Ability to receive and accurately process patient specimens.
    • Ensure patient safety and quality processes in the laboratory.
    • Ability to work independently.
