Overview
Manages the growth, retention and profitability of an assigned territory within the Excess & Surplus lines Brokerage division. Leads, develops, coaches and provides feedback to a team of underwriters and coordinates their activities that align with company goals and initiatives. Assists in the development, communication and execution of underwriting strategy and initiatives and operates within letter of authority. Provides management with premium and profitability reports along with strategies for growth and improvement. Responsible for the design and implementation of departmental process improvements to increase procedural efficiency, productivity and overall service quality levels.
Responsibilities
- Manages, coordinates, directs and monitors activities and results of an underwriting team to obtain and ensure accurate, quality work while at the same time maintaining high production standards.
- Oversees training and development of staff.
- Evaluates and gives guidance to staff on an on-going basis as to their abilities and duties and makes personnel recommendations to ensure proper and optimum use of personnel.
- Schedules, prioritizes and distributes workflow of unit to ensure work is down in a timely fashion and all deadlines are met.
- Assists the Relationship Manager and assigned underwriters on the development of marketing strategies and proactive management of Agents within assigned region.
- Reviews and recommends procedural changes.
- Plans, supports, and implements procedural changes.
- Keeps current on all changes effecting unit's work production and on changes within the insurance industry.
- Analyzes data and/or creates unique solutions.
- Monitors and ensures the achievement of the region's premium and profitability goals and keeps abreast of current market conditions that affect business levels.
- This involves ensuring General Agents meet expectations in terms of production, profitability and all other operating expectations.
- Arbitrate problems between agents, insured's, or other departments.
- Responsible for executing monthly and quarterly reports for management of the territory.
- May participate in General Agency training of company applications and guidelines as required.
- Testifies in court and/or participates in the taking of depositions as needed on claims or coverage issues.
Participates in state pricing reviews, quarterly audit reviews of underwriting files, budget meetings or various higher level manager meetings as may be required. - Stays alert for and advise company of any industry information, new ideas, products, or changes in other carrier philosophies either positively or adversely affecting the company.
- Develops professional working relationship with agents keeping a two-way communication between agent and company.
- Provides guidance to General Agents and provides technical guidance and expertise to underwriters.
- Acts as a liaison with other supervisors or managers, branches and corporate departments with whom their unit interacts.
- Conducts agency visits which requires car travel of approximately 25% of employee's time and a valid driver's license.
- May be required to attend General Agent sponsored events.
Qualifications
- List the knowledge, qualifications, and requirements necessary to perform the job.
- Broad underwriting technical background. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Good analytical skills.
- Proficient with Word, excel & Outlook.
- Must have a valid state-issued driver's license in good standing and be able to drive an automobile.
- College degree preferred.
- 7+ years Underwriting experience required.
- 3+ years experience in rating, inspections, and claims is preferred.
- Prior leadership experience preferred.
