Job Summary:

The Researcher will work with the principal investigator and graduate students or postdocs in the Engin Lab within the Biomolecular Chemistry Department to establish a robust research program studying cellular stress responses in diabetes. Work in the laboratory involves molecular biology, cell culture, microscopy, and mouse metabolic and pharmacological treatment experiments.

The successful candidate will conduct independent research under the guidance of the PI and design/develop of lab experiments involving molecular biology (PCR, quantitative PCR, flow cytometry, mammalian cell culture, cell biology (immunostaining, microscopy). The candidate will be required to maintain genetically manipulated mouse lines and to characterize metabolic phenotypes in these strains. Procedures include mouse husbandry, PCR-based genotyping, histology, immunohistochemistry, and metabolic phenotyping (measurement of body weight and blood glucose, collection of tissue and blood samples, treatment of mice with various drugs).

The Researcher will prepare figures of their experiments/findings and present their data in weekly lab meetings and potentially in other local or national seminars/conferences. Additional responsibilities include ordering supplies when necessary, maintaining laboratory records, preparation of some laboratory reagents, maintaining laboratory equipment, supervising student workers, and training laboratory staff in techniques and protocols. It is expected that the research specialist will be an active participant in the lab, attend and present at regular group meetings, and prepare portions of scientific manuscripts on which she/he will be a co-author.


Responsibilities:
Provides technical expertise to fundamental and/or applied scientific research under the direction of senior research personnel or faculty.

  • 55% Collects and analyzes basic research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures
  • 10% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities and assists with publications
  • 10% Trains individuals and groups on equipment operations, research protocols, and techniques within a specialized laboratory or research area
  • 15% Assists with the development of research methodologies and procedures
  • 5% Identifies concerns and recommends solutions to leadership
  • 5% Assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding

Education:

Required
Master's Degree in the biological sciences with an emphasis on biochemistry, cell biology, immunology or genetics


Qualifications:

Two (2) full years experience in a research laboratory post-graduation is highly desired. Research experience in the following areas is preferred: molecular biology techniques, microscopy, and mammalian cell culture. Additional consideration will be given to applicants with previous experience working with mouse colonies. Demonstrated ability to learn new techniques and train others is desired. Personal initiative, independence, strong organizational abilities and enthusiasm for laboratory research are essential.
