Join Our Team as a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

Are you a passionate para-professional ready to make a meaningful difference in your community? The WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is comfortable working with diverse populations, and thoughtfully supports and respectfully considers the needs and the situational experience of the predominant racial/ethnic background of the mothers you work with. You can easily communicate via the clinic, telephone, and text messaging per protocol; you are also thorough in your documentation. You know how to navigate challenges in client assistance as you help with acquiring breast pumps, after-hours support and participating in breastfeeding coalition meetings and special projects. Clinic Hours Monday-Friday 8:00-AM-4:30 PM. Flexibility scheduling to meet the needs of clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide compassionate breastfeeding support through clinic visits, telephone, and text messaging, following established protocols.
  • Evaluate breastfeeding intentions, knowledge, and potential barriers for prenatal WIC participants.
  • Maintain accurate records of all client interactions in the WIC ROSIE system.
  • Offer and document breastfeeding assistance outside of regular hours.
  • Participate in breastfeeding coalition meetings, special projects, and ongoing professional education (25 hours per 5-year cycle).

Examples of Duties

* Educate, encourage and support breastfeeding women via clinic, telephone and text messaging following established contact protocols
* Assess breastfeeding intention, knowledge and barriers of women enrolled in WIC prenatally.
* Document all contacts in Education and Care Plan area of WIC ROSIE system
* Provide and document after-hours breastfeeding support.
* Completes job specific continuing education (25 hours per 5 year cycle).

Qualifications

* Must have breastfed an infant for 6 months or more within the last 7 years.
* Must be comfortable working with diverse populations.
* Must have experience using Microsoft Office suite.
* Candidate will be recruited and hired from WIC's target population.
* High School/GED
