Description
The Circulation assistant performs highly detailed tasks of a limited professional nature which requires knowledge of library procedures, techniques, and/or methods. The person in this role is primarily responsible for service desk procedures, collection maintenance, reserve collection maintenance and customer service, prioritizes and ethically maintains supervision of library accounts according to library policies, trains others in shelving and reserve collection maintenance, and other administrative library duties. Typical Duties and Responsibilities Service Desk and Customer Service:
- Primarily prioritizes circulation procedures such as checking in and out materials, processing holds, and processing damaged materials (according to experience)
- Maintains and processes study room reservations
- Collects and accounts for replacement and late fees/balances accounts (after training)
- Assists library users with library requests in person, via email, and over the phone
- Assists with reader's advisory, ready-reference, using finding tools, and database searching
- Answers general information questions
- Monitors circulation procedures and proper operation of automated systems
- Monitors circulation email account and communications through that medium
- Initiates opening procedures of the library during the business week
- Supervises and trains student workers in service desk procedures
Account Maintenance:
- Monitors library user accounts in good and bad standing
- Orders fines and fees when necessary, including damaged materials, lost materials, print jobs
- Safeguards privileged account information, including, but not limited to, patrons requests, materials circulated, and identifying personal information
Collection Maintenance:
- Conducts collection maintenance tasks, including reshelving processes, shelf reading, shelf cleaning and general tidying
- Maintains course reserve collection (responding to professors reserve requests, pulling books, setting up reserves lists in ILS, physically processing books for the room, cleaning the room out at the end of each semester)
- Maintains reserve technology (twice-annual inventories, processing contracts, following up with students when pieces aren't returned or are broken)
- Processes damaged materials, including charging accounts and referring damages to Technical Services or Collection Development
- Communicates collection issues/needs to Collection Development Librarian
Other Responsibilities:
- Assists library staff with library programs and related tasks as needed
- Assists with library displays (selecting themes, titles, and designing graphics for the display, consistent with university and library branding standards)
- Assists library users with safely and responsibly using the library's microform reader, including retrieving requested microforms
- Performs administrative/clerical tasks related to library operations (elevator hours, contact lists, end cap range labels, consistent with university and library branding standards)
- Assists Collection Development Librarian with tasks as needed/assigned
- Assists with training student workers in Circulation Desk duties, reserves and stacks management tasks
