Job Description Summary:We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly adaptable Airborne Research Technician to join our dynamic team.

This role will involve traveling to various research locations to support and conduct atmospheric research through airborne platforms.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with scientific instruments, a passion for atmospheric science, and the ability to work in a team under sometimes challenging conditions. Position Details:

Additional requirements:

  • Possession of a valid US driver's license and Motor Vehicle Record that meets UCAR's acceptability requirements for driving on UCAR business under UCAR policy 4-5.

  • Must have or be able to obtain a passport.

  • Must be able to travel for up to 6 weeks at a time, up to 4 months per year, domestically and/or internationally.

  • Must be able to work occasional overtime.

  • Some or all of the work in this position description must be performed on-site at UCAR campuses and/or remote field sites that are domestic and/or international.

What You Will Do

Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

Key Responsibilities:

Instrumentation Development and Maintenance:

  • Design, build, and test specialized electronic circuits and assemblies.

  • Create technical documentation and FAA certification materials.

  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair aircraft research instrumentation.

  • Install and integrate research equipment on aircraft.

Field Operations:

  • Participate in test flights and field deployments.

  • Operate, maintain, and calibrate research equipment and data systems.

  • Provide technical support to field teams.

Laboratory Support:

  • Perform instrument bench tests and laboratory calibrations.

  • Assist scientists and engineers in instrument maintenance and repair.

Successful candidates will ensure their application materials speak to the following criteria:

Education & Experience REQUIRED:

  • Graduation certificate from a technical institute in an electrical, mechanical, or other relevant area and two years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities REQUIRED:

Technical Skills:

  • Experience with signal and power distribution systems.

  • Proficiency in electronic circuit analysis and testing.

  • Knowledge of computer system installation and networking.

  • Skill in gas handling system assembly and operation.

  • Skills in soldering, desoldering, and using hand and power tools.

  • Ability to read electrical schematics and understand electronic components.

  • Proficiency in computer software (word processing, spreadsheets, databases).

Problem-Solving and Communication:

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written).

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Experience with research operations and instrument checkout.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Desired but Not Required:

  • Operational knowledge of logic analyzers, digitizing oscilloscopes, signal generators, and spectrum analyzers.

  • Familiarity with the FAA standards and FAA Advisory Circular 43.13-B.

  • Experience with PCB Express, PCB123, TurboCAD, and/or MS Excel/Word/Access.

  • Experience working with Linux operating systems.
