Nature of Work: This is inspection work in enforcement of municipal codes and ordinances pertaining to hydronic heating and cooling systems, boilers, air ventilation, conditioning, heating and cooling systems, and pressurized vessels. Work also involves the inspection of water piping, radiators, gas storage tanks, fire lines, sprinkler systems, air compression systems, and fuel and exhaust systems of standby power generators. Employees in this class work alone and are responsible to make independent decisions, subject to periodic review by supervisors.

Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.

High school diploma or its equivalent
AND one of the following:
1)Seven (7) years of experience as a journeyman level steam/pipe fitter in the installation and layout of boilers, pressure vessels, hydronic, refrigeration, and process piping systems
OR
1)Seven (7) years of experience as a journeyman level installer in the installation and layout of air distribution, ventilation, and conditioning systems
OR
1)Seven (7) years of experience as a first grade stationary engineer in the operation of boilers and pressure vessels.

Special Qualifications: Must possess, and have held for a minimum of five years, a valid City of Omaha-issued first grade stationary engineer's license, or a journeyman level steam/pipefitter's license, or a journeyman ACAD/Sheet Metal license and have received a passing score of 75% on the "Prometric" Journeyman Unlimited Air Conditioning exam or a passing score on the International Code Council's Journeyman Mechanical exam at the time of application.

Must be able to transport oneself or coordinate transportation to work sites throughout the City during the course of the work day.

Pay Range: $25.69 with step increases to $37.27 Hourly

Examination Information: The multiple-choice/written examination will be on a date to be determined at the Omaha/Douglas Civic Center, 1819 Farnam St. An invitation via email to the exam will be given to candidates once their application has been received, reviewed by a recruiter, and accepted to the test for the position. The test is designed to assess knowledge of the job, skills, and abilities of this position. The passing score on the examination is 60%. This will be weighted 100% in the final score.

Veteran Points: To claim five (5) points for veteran's preference, you must submit proof of service (such as a DD-214) that includes the date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. (You must have completed more than 180 consecutive days of active duty.) To receive an additional five (5) points credit for disability, you must submit proof of eligibility from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs dated within the last 12 months. This information must be submitted to the Human Resources Department by January 14, 2025.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Knowledge of steam and pipe fitting installation and repair materials and procedures
* Knowledge of the construction and maintenance of boilers and other pressure vessels
* Knowledge of the codes and ordinances regulating the installation and operation of boilers and pressure vessels, installation and repair of hydronic heating and cooling systems, and the installation and placement of flammable liquid storage tanks, compressed gas storage, fuels, and exhaust systems
* Knowledge of safety standards pertaining to the installation of boilers and pressure vessels, hydronic heating and cooling systems, flammable liquid storage tanks, and compressed gas storage tanks
* Knowledge of warm air heating, ventilation, and air conditioning installation materials and practices
* Knowledge of city codes governing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning installation and repair
* Knowledge of and ability to operate a computer or other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks
* Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronics device technology and software
* Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints quickly and accurately and to compare them with work in progress
* Ability to detect code violations and to appraise the quality of materials and construction
* Ability to understand written or oral instructions
* Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of the general public
* Ability to sit, stand, or walk from 51 to 75% of the time and to climb, reach, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, and lift up to 25% of the time
* Ability to use up to twenty (20) pounds of force to move objects up to 33% of the time, up to ten (10) pounds of force to move objects from 34 to 66% of the time, and lesser amounts of force to move objects from 67 to 100% of the time

Essential Functions: Any one position may not perform all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all of the duties that may be performed in positions allocated to this class:

* Inspects new, replacement, and retrofit installations and makes annual inspections at existing installations of heating , and cooling ventilation, and conditioning systems, associated pipes, radiators, valves, refrigeration, furnaces, air handling unit, fans, ductwork, coils, boilers, pressure vessels, fire lines, sprinkler systems, flammable liquid storage tanks, pressurized gas storage facilities, air compression systems, and standby power system fuel and exhaust systems for compliance with codes and ordinances
* Checks to see that persons operating inspected equipment are properly licensed as required and assists in administering tests to engineers and operators to ensure their qualification to run the equipment
* Checks to see that persons installing a mechanical system are properly licensed as required
* Writes reports on work performed and maintains records of structures inspected
* Reviews building plans to insure code compliance and makes suggestions for changes as needed
* Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor
* Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification
