About the Opportunity

The West Virginia University Research Corporation is seeking applications for a Junior Data Scientist with the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI). This position resides within following WVCTSI core: Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD). This position will assist WVCTSI Biomedical Informatics Resources group with analyzing data, modeling, and developing machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for various projects. Incumbent will assist with data wrangling as well. This position reports to the Senior Data Scientist. Position will be responsible for writing code in Python and/or R, interpreting and reporting results, and preparing journal manuscripts. This position will also report to the office of Graduate Education (ORGE) to assist in projects and programs in which data scientist skillsets are needed. The responsibilities with WVCTSI will encompass 70% of this position and the responsibilities with the ORGE will encompass 30% of the position.

Incumbent will follow data management standards, procedures, and documentation using knowledge of the healthcare regulatory environment to ensure conformance to internal and external policies, protocols, and regulations such as HIPAA. Responsibilities require some judgment, resourcefulness, and originality, but diverse guides and precedents are usually available to apply or adapt to the circumstances. Work effort has considerable impact on client services, program and project image, with potential legal liabilities.

What You'll Do



  • Develop, evaluate, and deploy ML algorithms for different projects.
  • Apply creative and strategic thinking to identify problems, solutions, and potential alternative approaches.
  • Maintain expertise in Python, R, and other data science tools as needed.
  • Provide dedicated data science support to the Office of Research and Graduate Education.
  • Prepare reports and journal manuscripts.
  • Contribute to the design of research.
  • Manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Work closely with clinicians, clinician scientists and researchers in order to map and support their operational needs.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, system architects, software architects, design analysts, and others to understand business or industry requirements.
  • Maintain security and confidentiality of patient information.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in machine learning, computer science, statistics, or other related field.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in the following:

    • Data science applications


  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Expertise in developing predictive models.
  • Expertise in Python libraries or data science R packages is required.
  • Expertise in data analytic programming and scripting.
  • Ability to demonstrate expertise in querying and cleansing large datasets.
  • Ability to create abstracts, posters, presentations, manuscripts, and other forms of disseminating research results.
  • Knowledge of database management systems (SQL preferred)
  • Expertise in at least one data visualization software (Tableau, PowerBI, Qlik, Shiny) or data science code base equivalents (R, Python, Julia, etc).
  • Must be able to perform in an independent manner with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to present and explain complex findings at various technical and non-technical levels of the organization.
  • Must have strong analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Must have effective time management skills at meeting deadlines.
  • Must be able to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Must be able to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Must have knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar, and the ability to communicate clearly.
  • Must maintains skills in, or knowledge of, professional principles, legal and/or reporting requirements affecting area of responsibility.
  • Must be able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The WVURC was created as a not-for-profit corporation in 1985 to support research (R1) at West Virginia University. We provide evaluation, development, patenting, management, and marketing services for inventions of the faculty, staff and students of the University.

The WVURC receives and administers funds awarded by external agencies for research and other activities and is responsible for helping protect intellectual property through patents, copyrights and licensing agreements for start-up companies based on University research.
