Job Summary

The Med Center Cook may be assigned to perform a wide scope of tasks throughout the department while demonstrating courteous, effective, and appropriate communication skills with our patients, other staff, and visitors to UC Davis Health. The Cook performs duties requiring previous training and experience in food preparation techniques.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Timely preparation of food items according to set recipe specifications in a clean, safe, and sanitary environment
  • Prepare food for one or more service areas such as trayline, cafeteria, cafeteria grill, deli, catering, etc.
  • Setup and preparation of items for all Food Services, according to recipes to meet Department standards
  • Communicate to the Lead(s), Supervisors, and Managers as appropriate any concerns, questions, or direction as needed
  • Cross-Coverage to complete temporary job assignments and duties, based on the Department's needs
  • Safety and Sanitation
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills in all interactions in alignment with the UC Davis Health Customer Service Standards and UC Davis Principles of Community
  • Quality Control

Minimum Qualifications: For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload their license, certification, and educational degree/diploma if required for the position

  • Demonstrated customer service experience working directly with customers
  • Must read, understand, and accurately prepare recipes
  • Must correctly adjust recipes to produce the required portions
  • Must use portion control to maintain flavor, and appearance, and contribute to cost containment
  • Must follow written and oral instructions
  • Must meet all schedules and assignments
  • Must be able to organize work and work area to complete assigned duties accurately and quickly
  • Ability to accurately use measuring equipment and utensils
  • Knowledge of sanitation and safety procedures/requirements used in hospitals and food service areas
  • Knowledge of diets, diet terminology, and dietary abbreviations or ability to learn these

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current ServSafe or Food Handler Card
  • Demonstrated experience with large-volume cooking

Department Overview

The primary purpose of the Joint Venture Rehabilitation Hospital is to provide a full range of rehabilitation services designed to restore patients to their optimal functional capacity. The hospital is a 52-bed rehabilitation hospital on the Sacramento Medical Center campus. It is equipped with leading-edge amenities and adaptive units where patients can practice typical activities of daily living. The rehabilitation hospital also includes a 12-bed brain injury unit and four private rooms for bariatric patients.
