Plant Science Education Research Cornell University Position: Assistant Professor, Tenure-track. Location: Cornell University, Ithaca NY. The academic home for this position is the School of Integrative Plant Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The School of Integrative Plant Science (SIPS) welcomes applications for a 9-month, full-time tenure-track position in Plant Science Education Research at the assistant professor level. We are looking for a highly collaborative individual who performs research on the methods, effectiveness, and impacts of plant science education and has a strong record of scientific expertise in one or more domains of plant science, including plant breeding and genetics, plant biology, horticulture, plant pathology, plant-microbe biology, mycology, and/or soil and crop sciences, reflecting the Sections of SIPS. Outstanding research scholarship is expected, as are excellence in, and demonstrated commitment to, evidence-based teaching, and advising and mentoring of students. Candidates are also expected to engage in service and leadership activities within their SIPS Section, the college and university, and relevant professional societies. Responsibilities: This position has an effort split of 60% research and 40% teaching. Research (60%) - The candidate will develop an impactful program of peer-reviewed scholarly research in Plant Science Education, a record of state and national funding, and a thoughtful, inclusive approach to mentoring and advising MS, MPS, and PhD level graduate students. Collaborative research with other faculty in SIPS, and more broadly across Cornell University and beyond, is expected. A disciplinary Education Research program might include, for example, (1) building methods to improve undergraduate learning in the Plant Sciences; (2) developing novel assessment tools; (3) studying how student metacognition affects learning outcomes; (4) investigating how student motivation to study the plant sciences affects retention; (5) studying effects of learning models or specific pedagogical approaches on career outcomes; (6) assessing how teaching and learning affect equity and diversity in plant sciences; (7) the significance, application and challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. Extension (0%) - There is no formal extension appointment, although agricultural extension and public education in plant sciences may be a research focus. Teaching (40%)- The successful candidate will teach at least two Cornell plant sciences classes, including at least one undergraduate class that contributes to our Plant Sciences and/or Agricultural Sciences undergraduate majors, and an introductory biology course with an emphasis on plant sciences for students across the University. Location: The successful candidate will be physically located at Cornell University's main campus, located in Ithaca, NY. Section Affiliation: The successful candidate will be a faculty member of the Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and will be based in the School of Integrative Plant Science (SIPS), in one of its five sections, to be decided based on the candidate's fit and interest. They will join a cohort of education researchers across the University. A mentoring program for new faculty provides guidance and assistance. Qualifications: The successful candidate will have completed a Ph.D. in a plant science or education-related field, with complementary experience or coursework.
