Orthopaedic Technologist

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking an Orthopaedic Technologist. The applicant must be proficient in casting, bracing, and orthotics. Must be able to demonstrate ability to apply, modify, and remove upper and lower extremity casts, and work with traction. Must have demonstrated ability to work with DME supplies and vendors. Will be responsible for DME and casting supplies inventory. Will assist physicians with clinical activities. This position will be required to travel 20% weekly to other outpatient locations as well as assist with evening clinics.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Orders Orthopedic equipment and supplies.
  • Takes necessary measurements (i.e., grip strength, leg lengths).
  • Removes sutures, staples, Steinman pins and K-wires.
  • Changes dressing and care for wounds.
  • Applies, adjusts and removes casts.
  • Assists with aspirations and prepares injections.
  • Records patient's blood pressure, pulse, and weight.
  • Phones and charts medication ordered by the physician.
  • Assists Orthopedic Surgeon in reduction of fractures.
  • Reviews standard admitting and pre-op instructions for patients having surgery.
  • Assists in making follow-up appointments and consultation appointments with other specialists for patients.
  • Measures and fits patients for braces and other Orthopedic devices.
  • Instructs patients in pre and post-operative care.
  • Instructs patients in proper care of cast and splints.
  • Cleans and stocks patient exam and treatment rooms.
  • Adheres to established clinic/office policy and procedure directives.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • One year experience as an Orthopaedic Technician.
  • Certification from the National Association of Orthopaedic Technologists as a Certified Orthopaedic Technologist, or registration from the American Society of Orthopaedic Professionals as a Registered Orthopaedic Technologist, or other related Orthopaedic Technologist certification/registration.
  • If not certified through NOAT or registered through ASOP at time of hire, certification or registration must be obtained within 12 months of date of hire. Certification or registration must be maintained while employed in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Failure to obtain/maintain certification or registration could result in termination of employment from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, or in reassignment.
