Medical Resident Year 1-Small Animal Medicine

About This Role

The Veterinary Health Center at Kansas State University is offering a three year small animal medicine residency with the opportunity for advanced study. The Small Animal Medicine section at the KSU VHC is supported by 4 board certified specialists. The Small Animal Medicine residency is further supported by board certified faculty in small animal surgery, anesthesiology, cardiology, radiology, ophthalmology, oncology and dermatology.

The resident will participate in all aspects of the services provided by the small animal medicine section. Enrollment in the graduate school and completion of a program of study leading to a Master of Science degree is encouraged, but not required. The residency program will include participation in clinical teaching, didactic lectures and continuing education programs. The resident will have increasing teaching and case management responsibilities with each year of residency. Responsibilities will include night and weekend emergency back-up duties on a rotating schedule.

The primary goal of the residency program is to provide a training experience that will lead to board certification in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Another goal is to provide research experience and additional scientific training. The resident will be required to submit one first author publication to a refereed journal during the residency program.

Residents receive semi-annual written evaluations which are discussed with the Resident Advisor and Hospital Director. Annual reappointment is contingent upon continued satisfactory performance in all aspects of the program.

The resident must be physically present for orientation on the first day of the program.
