About the Department |
The Department of Computer Science is an academic teaching and research department in the College of Engineering. It is a large and complex unit that encompasses research intensive, teaching intensive and professional activities. It is one of the largest such departments in the nation by the number of faculty and students, and its total budget and size are comparable to, or larger than, a number of NC State University colleges and divisions. |
Essential Job Duties |
The Research Administration Manager is responsible for leading and managing the sponsored research team in the Department of Computer Science, overseeing all pre- and post-award functions. Your leadership experience will inspire and guide a team of five research administrators,fostering a collaborative environment while ensuring compliance with federal, state, university, and departmental policies and procedures.Additionally, you will serve as a resource for faculty and staff, providing expertise in research administration and developing tools and training to support efficient workflows.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Oversight
- Manage sponsored research portfolios for assigned Principal Investigators (PIs).
- Supervise and mentor the sponsored research team, ensuring accurate proposal submissions and compliance with regulations.
- Develop and implement workflows, auditing processes, and training programs to enhance research administration efficiency.
Pre-Award Management
- Assist faculty in preparing budgets, justifications, and proposals.
- Review sponsor requirements, initiate proposal submissions, and ensure compliance with university processes.
- Serve as a liaison between PIs, the university, and funding agencies.
Post-Award Management
- Oversee financial actions, including re-budgeting, equipment acquisitions, travel, no-cost extensions, and pre-award costs.
- Provide budget projections, monitor expenditures, and ensure compliance with Cost Accounting Standards.
- Complete account closeouts and final financial reporting.
Compliance and Reporting
- Monitor accounts to ensure adherence to university and federal guidelines.
- Maintain records for release time, summer salary, and Graduate Research Assistants.
- Provide structured cost-share and effort reporting to department leadership.
Faculty Support and Training
- Train new faculty in research administration policies and tools.
- Keep faculty informed of deadlines, compliance updates, and funding opportunities.
- Attend university meetings to stay current on finance and research administration policies.

Other Responsibilities |
In addition to the core responsibilities of this role, you will act as the financial liaison between the Department of Computer Science and research offices, ensuring effective communication and collaboration. Attend campus meetings to stay informed on policies, support team operations as needed, and contribute to departmental events like graduations and seminars. |
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or Other Discipline related to the area of assignment with 12 Credit Hours of accounting coursework and three years of professional accounting experience, of which at least one is supervisory; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Extensive experience in research administration, including pre- and post-award management.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to supervise and develop staff.
- In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and university regulations.
- Proficiency with financial systems, such as PINS, PMR, PeopleSoft, and agency electronic submission systems.
- Commitment to fostering a supportive and collaborative environment.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, organizational and problem solving skills, experience using the Internet.
- Basic accounting principles (journal entries, debits/credit, generally accepted accounting principles, auditing, federal circulars, governmental accounting standards board (GASB), fund accounting, budgeting, and state and university policies and regulations.
