Description The Brady laboratory in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking highly energetic and organized applicants for a full-time Visiting Research Specialist position. This role will involve overseeing the maintenance of a biomedical laboratory which has uses a combination of cell and molecular methods including primary neuronal cultures from rodents, use of transgenic mouse models and generation/production of monoclonal antibodies. The successful candidate will participate in both scientific research and management of the lab. Our research focus is molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease and Tauopathies as well as ALS and Huntington's disease. Experimental procedures include molecular and cellular biology, cloning, transfection, immunochemistry, histology, microscopy and small animal surgeries. Duties and Responsibilities Carry out mouse husbandry, colony maintenance, genotyping using PCR and other methodologies, updating mouse colony records. Maintain inventory of lab supplies and chemicals. Ordering lab supplies and maintaining laboratory stocks. Standardize and systematize comprehensive laboratory protocols while maintaining accurate records of the work performed. Preparation and implementation of general laboratory maintenance protocols (e.g. safety, training, waste management, animal, etc.). Ensure that laboratory procedures comply with all safety requirements. Supervise and train new graduate and undergraduate students. Test, optimize and implement both new and existing methods/techniques. Collaborate with the PI and other lab members to prepare or perform experimental procedures in molecular biology, biochemistry, immunocytochemistry, primary neuronal cell culture and live cell imaging. Preferred Qualifications Qualifications: Past experience in mouse husbandry and preparation of primary neuronal cultures is an advantage. Experience in biochemical and molecular biology methods desirable. Enthusiasm for learning and gaining research and lab management experience, and the ability to coordinate and supervise others effectively are the most critical requirements of the position. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and organized, and strong communication skills are a must. This position requires three years of previous research experience, and a Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, preferably in neuroscience, physiology or an equivalent discipline.
