Primary Purpose of Department
Institutional Research and Decision Support is charged by the Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs to:

  • Collect, validate, and analyze data required for external reporting
  • Disseminate needed and requested data for internal planning and for assessment of institutional programs
  • Conduct special studies on various aspects of the institution
  • Provide assistance to others within the University who are engaged in research or conducting campus-wide surveys
  • Provide assistance to the campus regarding planning and assessment processes, and SACS accreditation compliance.


As a unit within the Division of Academic Affairs, the office is accessible to all academic programs and is close to the planning process established by the Provost. Although much of its work is related to the academic side of the institution, units in the other University divisions as well as the Chancellor's Office regularly require services of the office. The staff also assists other members of the University community who want to conduct institutional studies.

Institutional Research services may include developing research techniques, providing required raw data, or participating in the compilation, analysis, and presentation of the study. The office provides assistance to the campus regarding internal planning, assessment, and evaluation in accordance with fundamental quality improvement. Institutional Research also provides consultation to the campus regarding obligations related to SACS standards and requirements. Finally, the Office of Institutional Research has the responsibility of institutional reporting to external agencies such as The University of North Carolina System Office, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Institutional Research Reporting Analyst supports the University's administrative efforts by providing comprehensive data and analytical expertise. This role involves creating and maintaining datasets, delivering descriptive and predictive analytics, enhancing data visualization, responding to surveys and ad-hoc information requests, and improving institutional effectiveness through information and process integration. Analytical and reporting responsibilities span various subject areas, covering the entire higher education decision-support spectrum.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Representative Duties:

  • Assist the Director and Associate Director in analyzing and reporting institutional data
  • Design, write, and optimize complex queries to extract, integrate, and transform data to support institutional research activities.
  • Respond to internal and external data and report requests.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain datasets in the office's data lake, encompassing admissions, enrollment, retention, graduation, financial aid, employment, and survey results
  • Collaborate with Institutional Effectiveness & Analytics and Assessment & Accreditation Staff to generate reports, support analytics, and advance data-informed decision-making across the University.
  • Collaborate with the Office of OneIT to conduct routine audits, and validation checks, and apply best practices in data governance to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of data.
  • Organize and present research-based information in narrative, tabular, and graphical formats including dashboards, visualizations, and presentations that effectively communicate findings to diverse stakeholders.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to meet the evolving needs of the University.

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor's Degree. Ability to program in WebFOCUS, SAS, SQL, or similar database querying language.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of Banner HR/Student, or similar Enterprise Resource Planning system.
  • Experience in Higher Education - specifically in an Institutional Research Office or an office with a similar function.
  • Experience with data manipulation and analysis of different types of data files, large and complex datasets, and relational databases.
  • Experience in data visualization using Tableau, Power BI, or similar.
  • Experience in data extraction from databases (e.g. Oracle, Amazon Redshift) using WebFOCUS, SAS, SQL, or similar data management tools.
  • Ability to work under pressure with frequent interruptions and to effectively deal with ambiguity and changing project requirements.
  • Ability to interpret university policies and university stakeholders' needs relating to institutional data.
