This job assumes responsibility for the bio-psychosocial assessment, patient education, evaluation, and treatment of patients with behavioral health needs. It may also include referral to appropriate community resources and supportive and crisis interventions. Applies specialized clinical knowledge and advanced clinical skills in the areas of prevention, assessment, and treatment of mental, emotional, behavioral, and addictive disorders; engages multi-disciplinary treatment planning and clinical counseling duties and coordinates and implements complex discharge plans through the use of the organization and community based services. Services may be provided in person or via virtual visit platform. Responsibilities may vary depending on inpatient or clinical setting.

Education

Required - 60 semester hour graduate degree, the substance of which is professional mental health counseling from a regionally-accredited university. (May include but not limited to Psychological Counseling, Community Mental Health, etc.)

Work Experience

Required - None.

Preferred - Two years related work experience in direct patient counseling

Certifications

Required - Must hold an active, non-restricted license as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) License in state of practice or Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor (LPC-S) by the Licensed Professional Counselors Board of Examiners or its successor.

Basic Life Support (BLS), and Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certificaton to be obtained within 2 weeks of hire*.

Must have or obtain within 90 days of hire the LA LPC Board approval to perform Teletherapy in state(s) of practice.**

*Only applies to inpatient units.

Preferred - Certification in Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS)

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
  • Good knowledge of common disease entities and disorders and medical terminology in order to understand acute and ongoing needs of patients and families
  • Knowledge of acute and chronic medical care setting, medical terminology and psycho-social effects of illness and/or trauma upon the patient and their support system.
  • Familiarity with health care systems and public programs such as those funded by Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare Advantage and commercial insurance plans.
  • Excellent psychotherapeutic skills.
  • Superior interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with patients, families, multi-disciplinary team members, departmental peers, and community agency personnel.

Job Duties

  • Conducts complex assessment, independent selection and use of varied in-depth therapies in the treatment of individuals with multi-problem dual diagnosis substance abuse problems (as defined by Licensed Professional Counselors Board of Examiners in Rule LAC 46:LX.50* e).
  • Develops and plans services that address and/or include family therapy, marital counseling, child abuse and sexual abuse therapy, major family disruption, developmental disabilities, death and suicide.
  • Provides information and/or referral services to patients, families and appropriate community agencies.
  • Documents contacts, psychosocial evaluations, care plan, discharge plans and progress notes in the patient's medical record.
  • Monitors and utilizes resources in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Incumbent will maintain professional and technical knowledge, as well as required certifications through continuing education and development.
  • Incumbent may deliver services in person or via a virtual visit platform (outpatient clinic role only).
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.

Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue.

The incumbent works in a patient care area; works in an area where patients enter; works directly with patients; and/or works with specimens that could contain communicable diseases. The incumbent has an occupational risk for exposure to all communicable diseases.
