Responsibilities

A day in the life of a lactation consultant at Hackensack Meridian Health:

  • Provide assessment, intervention and education regarding breastfeeding to childbearing families choosing to breastfeed their infants in Maternal Child Services.
  • Provide lactation consultation to families having infants admitted to Special Care Nursery and Pediatric Observation as needed.
  • Provide lactation consultation to breastfeeding women admitted to any unit in the Medical Center.
  • Communicate with professional staff in Maternal Child Services regarding breastfeeding patients.
  • Document fully all teaching and interventions provided to breastfeeding families.
  • Assist with nursing staff competencies and physician education regarding breastfeeding.
  • Provide support with coordination of perinatal community education classes.

Qualifications
  • Must have an American Heart Association BLS / CPR Certification
  • Must have a current NJ RN license
  • IBCLC with board certification maintained through examination and/or continuing education required
  • A minimum of two years of experience as an OB nurse.
  • BSN preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in lactation consultation in acute care, community or public health setting
  • Annual Basic Training to maintain competency in Environment of Care, HIPPA privacy standards. Emergency preparedness, hazardous materials and waste, and standard precautions
  • The ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing patient needs, a strong sense of accountability for improving the lives of our patients and caregivers, an exceptional focus on team work, dedication to ongoing education and the ability and passion to deliver the highest quality of care and service based on a strong sense of patient focus are all required
