The Manager Clinical Access provides direct management and coordination of all activities involving the transfer center. Works in partnership with nursing, providers, the healthcare team, and hospital/system leaders to ensure the transition for all emergent, urgent, and elective patients into the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford from referring hospitals, clinics, and physician's offices. Ensures a setting that supports professionalism, safety, and quality patient care. The Manager is accountable for all activities and communication involved in transferring and admitting patients.

Essential Functions

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Service Standards of the Hospital(s).

  • Performs management functions by interviewing and hiring staff members; providing or arranging for training for subordinates; evaluating performance; and recommending or initiating personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, merit salary increases, or disciplinary action in order to ensure adequate and competent staffing as well as initiating or recommending responses to employee grievances.

  • Manages the entire cycle of the Transfer Center and Patient Placement daily functions by assigning work, developing work procedures consistent with hospital policy, establishing work schedules and monitoring work performance performed by subordinates in order to meet agreed-upon goals, objectives, and target dates.

  • The manager facilitates and oversees all communication between referring and receiving hospitals/physicians in a professional and effective manner.

  • Ensures staff document all required information pertaining to the patient transfer process accurately and thoroughly.

  • Applies approved clinical criteria to evaluate appropriateness of transfer/admission and level of care.

  • Documents findings based on department standards.

  • Partners with Life Flight/ambulance vender and specialty transport teams to coordinate flight and ground transportation as needed and collaborates with financial counseling to protect the financial integrity of the facility.

  • Maintains knowledge base of processes and systems by attending meetings and reviewing training materials, identifies and works to resolve system problems impacting transfers.

  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.

  • Responsibilities include coordination of patient care; supervision of a professional team that includes nursing, paramedics, coordinators, and other staff.

  • Customizes and updates education based upon current best practices, defines staff roles and accepts organizational accountability for services provided to recipients.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Bachelor's degree in a work-related field/discipline from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience

License/Certification: CA Registered Nurse (RN) and Current American Heart Association (AHA) Certification for Basic Life Support (BLS) as a Healthcare Providers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with widely diverse groups, including individuals at all levels both within and outside the organization and gain their cooperation

  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, work independently and meet deadlines

  • Management principles and practices such as, but not limited to, employee hiring, evaluation, counseling, and termination; budgeting; employee recognition and rewards.

  • Knowledge of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) and related regulations Knowledge of the requirements and regulations of third-party payers, such as Medi-Cal, Medicare, CCS and other government programs as well as private insurance preferred.

  • Able to accurately communicate medical status and care provided at referring facility to the acute care nursing staff of patients transferring to the hospital.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Ability to perform complex tasks, prioritize multiple projects, and work under pressure to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Pay Range

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.

Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.

Minimum to Midpoint Range (1.0 FTE): $171,849.60 to $211,858.40
