Position Summary
This is technical work in performing routine as well as non-standardized laboratory testing. Work includes responsibility for performing a variety of standard and highly specialized analytical tests on soils, plants, animal waste and agricultural materials, and for the accuracy of results of the standardized tests. Also includes the performance of the more difficult and complex tests and examinations and re-tests where abnormal or typical results are obtained, and sample preparation and disposal.

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, and techniques used in laboratory work.
  • Computer literate - spread sheet and word processing.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Prepare soil samples and analyze them for pH and lime buffering capacity on the pH robot instrument following all relevant SOPs and QA/QC protocols.
  • Maintain and keep pH equipment in running condition.

  • Perform all organic matter, exchangeable aluminum, greenhouse, and saturated paste extractions.
  • Provide backup analysis for boron and soluble salts in soils using various extraction methods.

  • Grinding and drying of soil.
  • Rotating racks of soil from the block building, and conducting quality checks of soil set.

  • Assist in sample receiving, making up soil sets for routine and special analysis.
  • Opening and organizing soil samples, preparing the laboratory quality check soil, and communicate with county offices to clarify submission issues.
