Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Medical Services Assistant for
NJMS-Infectious Disease Practice Division.
The Medical Services Assistant (
MSA) provides medical assistance to nurses and physicians in the overall care of patients, including technical procedures such as phlebotomy and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections. The
MSA functions under the direct supervision and authority of the physician when performing clinical tasks during patient care. Demonstrates competency in all skills related to the performance of patient care. The individual displays responsible behaviors, communicates effectively to others and functions as a healthcare team member. Demonstrates problem-solving skills related to patient care activities, provides guidance for and acts as a role model for medical assistants in the clinical area.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Participates in the care of the patient, under the direct supervision of the Physician and in collaboration with the healthcare team.
- In close partnership with health care team, assures smooth and efficient patient flow and clinical operation.
- Maintains an inventory of examination/procedure room supplies, assists in the organization of efficient patient flow, and organizes the clinic environment to assure patient safety.
- Acts as a resource and preceptor for Medical Assistants
- Schedules patient appointments including outside physicians and hospital/ancillary services.
- Assist with receptionist, telephone, and filing duties.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Graduation of a post-secondary medical assisting education program accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Current certification from the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistant (AAMA), or registration from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT), or any recognized certifying body approved by the Board.
- Applicants may be licensed in the State of New Jersey in another classification permitted by regulations to give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
- Must have attained a satisfactory level of comprehension and experience in the administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous injection techniques.
- Computer literacy with competence in Microsoft Office components required.

Preferred Qualifications |
- At least one (1) year of related experience in a medical office setting preferred.
NJDHSS HIV counselor certification strongly preferred.- Demonstrated ability to speak clearly, write proficiently. Knowledge of Newark community preferred.
- Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred.

PHYSICAL
DEMANDS:
Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Must be able to lift or exert force up to ten (10) pounds. Assists with transportation services in the clinic.
WORK
ENVIRONMENT:
Office environment. Moderate noise. Occasional (less than 1/3 of time) exposure to blood-borne pathogens that requires use of personal protective equipment. |
