Architectural Historian

S&ME is currently accepting applications for a full time Architectural Historian to join our Environmental team in Charleston, South Carolina. Depending on qualifications and experience the selected applicant may qualify as an Associate Architectural Historian (early career), Architectural Historian (more experience), or Senior Architectural Historian (mid to late career position). As an Architectural Historian, you will analyze and document unique structures, engage in client consultations, and plan and conduct fieldwork. This role combines research, fieldwork, and technical writing with project management tasks like scheduling and budgeting. Additionally, your knowledge or interest in environmental and cultural resources compliance will support projects that protect and preserve our heritage, making it perfect for someone with a keen eye for detail and a passion for history.

Your Day-to-Day:



  • Research: Historical research in local, state, and regional libraries, archives, and government offices.
  • Historic Resource Surveys and Assessments: Conduct fieldwork for historic resource surveys which may include site visits, site plan sketches, and related duties. Record activities may include conducting historic and archival research, developing historic and/or architectural contexts, and making National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) evaluations.
  • Forms and Documentation: Prepare historic property inventory forms, including statements of significance and architectural descriptions. Document historic properties potentially impacted by state or federal undertakings.


The successful applicant will work with other cultural resources professionals, engineers, clients, and agency representatives to conduct above ground historic property surveys, complete NRHP eligibility evaluations, develop Section 106 Effects findings, negotiate agreement documents, implement mitigation activities, and other related tasks.

What You Bring:



  • Minimum of a Master's degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, history, or a closely related field.
  • Basic understanding of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and other applicable federal and state preservation laws.
  • Experience in historical research and writing, including being able to present clear, precise, analytical, and authoritative arguments. S&ME may request a writing sample from qualified candidates
  • National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 training
  • Proficiently conduct architectural field surveys, complete state site forms, and utilize geographic information system software



Pay Range:

$35,000-$99,000

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:



  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
  • Carry equipment and walk through various types of vegetation, on paved and unpaved surfaces, for the duration of the day, as needed.
  • Regularly travel out of town, including overnight, for project work as necessary.
