Funding is paid on an hourly basis at a rate of $20/hour. Applications should indicate the number of hours the applicant is willing to commit per week during the Spring 2025 semester (5, 10, 15, or 20). The Humanitarian Engineering Program is pleased to announce its next round of student funding from the Shultz Family Fund. The Humanitarian Engineering program (HE) promotes socially responsible engineering by educating engineers and scientists to work as partners with communities seeking to enhance their social, environmental, and economic sustainability. This is done through a variety of programming, including undergraduate and graduate academic degrees (see https://humanitarian.mines.edu/). For many years, thanks to the generosity of alumnus Chuck Shultz and his family, the Shultz Undergraduate Scholarships in Humanitarian Engineering have supported students enrolled in HE-related academic programs. This year, for the first time, the Shultz Scholarship Program is being expanded to fund students who might not be enrolled in HE academic programs, through the Schultz Outreach Scholars Program. Being a Schultz Outreach (or, Scholar) is a leadership opportunity for undergraduate students who are dedicated to serving and representing socially responsible engineering in various communities, including K12 and community colleges. The initial Schultz Outreach Scholars, in Spring 2025, will work with HE staff and the Office of K14 Education and Community Partnerships to develop outreach activities to promote and educate K12 and community college audiences, particularly those underrepresented in STEM, about socially responsible engineering (SRE). Outreach activities will be connected to both existing Mines K14 programs as well as new opportunities. Scholar activities will be completed in the Spring 2025 semester, with the possibility or additional activity during the following summer. Scholar duties may include: Working with K14 Education and Community Partnerships staff, the Scholar will be involved in outreach that could include: - Assist with engineering design workshops in local Denver metro area high schools (Jeffco, Denver and Aurora Public Schools) to support teachers who are participating in the Mines EcoSphere Innovation Challenge - Support the development of an engineering program at Alameda International Jr/Sr High School by working with small groups of students on SRE as part of an Introduction to Engineering class - Develop and deliver a presentation for community college transfer students and advisors to increase awareness of Design Engineering and HE as options for studies at Mines - Develop a half-day workshop to introduce high school SUMMET students to EDS, DE, and HE through SRE Working with HE staff, Scholars might participate in other activities and events around campus that promote socially responsible engineering, as such opportunities arise. They are also expected to become part of the Shultz Scholars Community on campus. Shultz Scholars also typically to meet Chuck Shultz and his family during their time on campus.
