Metra's Engineering Department is staffed with over 800 employees who work tirelessly applying technology and engineering principles in the design, construction, operation, and management of our network of infrastructure, facilities, and equipment so that customers can enjoy a safe, comfortable, economical, and dependable transit experience.

Engineering is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metra's fixed assets, such as buildings, stations, bridges, track, electrical, telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects, and Communications and Maintenance.

Reporting to the Director, Civil Engineering, the Civil Engineer 1 will perform entry level professional engineering duties for the construction, repair, maintenance of bridges, retaining walls, and related infrastructure assets, and coordinate construction and repair projects.

The primary duties include: Conduct bridge inspections to assess condition, determine needed repairs and compliance with bridge safety standards, and prepare reports of findings and recommendations.

Maintain inventory records of materials for bridge maintenance, prioritize capital projects, and maintain loading capacity and sufficiency calculations for all bridges.

Prepare plans, cost estimates, and schedules for repair projects; procure materials; and provide technical support to in-house repair crews and outside contractors.

Conduct Engineering Asset Management and Facility Condition Assessment inspections, determine state of repair, and document findings. Inventory, inspect, categorize and identify repair/replacement priorities for retaining walls; prepare plans, cost estimates, and schedules for repairs; procure materials; coordinate repairs; and provide technical support to in-house crews and outside contractors.

Promote safe work practices and maintain and foster a safe work environment.

Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.

Requirements

1. Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited school.

2. Working knowledge of:

  • civil engineering design and construction principles, methods, and standards.
  • materials, techniques, and components used in infrastructure construction, maintenance and repair.

3. Good:

  • organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • verbal and written communication skills.

4. Proficient in computer aided design and drafting system applications (CADD) and Microsoft Office 365 with emphasis in Word and Excel.

5. Intermediate skill in database systems applications.

6. Ability to:

  • read engineering drawings and interpret engineering specifications for both bridges and buildings.
  • conduct detailed bridge inspections.
  • work independently.
  • exercise good judgment in decision making.

7. Must:

  • possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region.
  • be available to work flexible hours in the early morning, late afternoon, evenings, or weekends.
