About the Job

The University of Minnesota-College of Veterinary Medicine (UMN-CVM) is excited to recruit a Clinical Pathologist to join our dynamic, cohesive, and supportive team of 5 Clinical Pathologists and 2 Clinical Pathology house officers. This appointment is a non-tenure (Clinical) track appointment with an emphasis on clinical diagnostic service and the instruction of DVM students and house officers. The applicant will be joining a Clinical Pathology team that strives to provide the highest quality diagnostic care, research, training, and teaching in a high functioning, collaborative, and supportive environment.

Position:

The UMN is offering an outstanding opportunity for a clinical (non-tenure) track full time (75-100% appointment) faculty position in Clinical Pathology at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. Rank will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Position Description:

The primary focus of this position will encompass the provision of excellent Clinical Pathology Diagnostic Service (approximately 50%) and Pathology Instruction (approximately 50%) with lesser focuses of Collaborative Research and Outreach. The final effort allocation for these efforts is negotiable based upon the candidate's professional goals and experience. The primary responsibilities upon hire comprises the provision of clinical cytology, hematology, clinical chemistry, and coagulation testing interpretation and clinical instruction to house officers and students. Additional responsibilities include contributing to collaborative research and providing discipline/non-discipline related service to the UMN-CVM and other professional organizations. Additional opportunities within this position include clinical pathology course development, diagnostic flow cytometry support, continuing educational outreach, and comparative clinical pathology support to the UMN research community.

Clinical Activities:

The UMN-CVM Clinical Pathology Laboratory is centrally located within the UMN Veterinary Medical Center and includes a dedicated, but connected ergonomically informed, Diagnostic Reading Room. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the art instrumentation including a Siemens ADVIA 2120 hematology analyzer, a Beckman Coulter AU480 chemistry analyzer, and a Werfen ACL TOP coagulation analyzer.

The UMN-CVM Clinical Pathology Laboratory is supported by high quality submissions from the UMN-VMC, which is one of the busiest veterinary teaching hospitals in the country with an annual caseload of over 40,000. Submissions to the UMN-CVM Clinical Pathology Laboratory largely derive from patients presenting to the UMN-VMC, principally from the Oncology, Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Primary Care services. This allows the successful applicant ample opportunity to further develop their clinical and teaching skills in a collaborative, busy, and vibrant teaching hospital. No on-call or weekend service is expected.

Teaching & Professional Development:

Upon hire, the faculty member will be assigned a mentorship committee. This committee will work with the newly-hired faculty member to create a personalized professional development plan to facilitate progressive growth and development. During this period, there will be an incremental and mentored onboarding of teaching and mentorship activities. Support and instruction for teaching is provided by the CVM Academic and Student Affairs Office and the Center for Educational Innovation (including the Early Career Teaching and Learning Program). Additional opportunities exist for Leadership, Communication, and Managerial Training.

Scholarly Activity:

The successful applicant will be expected to provide collaborative research support in alignment with their final effort allocation. This includes collaboration with UMN-CVM House Officers (including Clinical Pathology Trainees), Faculty, and Students on the design and successful completion of comparative and clinical research projects. The UMN-CVM Clinical Pathology Laboratory has a long and successful history of scholarly collaboration with internal and external research partners, including Clinicians with the UMN-VMC and UMN Raptor Center, The Comparative Pathology Shared Resource, Experimental Surgical Services, The UMN-Veterinary Diagnostic Flow Cytometry Service, and basic scientists across the CVM and UMM Health Sciences Education Center.
