We are looking for a skilled and dedicated Certified Pharmacy Technician to join our dynamic pharmacy team. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing and dispensing medications, including non-IV, sterile, and chemotherapy products, under the supervision of a pharmacist. Your work will directly contribute to patient care and safety by ensuring medications are accurately prepared, packaged, and labeled while adhering to industry standards and hospital policies.
This position requires strong attention to detail, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Non-IV Medication Preparation & Dispensing:

  • Accurately prepare non-IV medications for dispensing based on computer fill lists, medication labels, or request forms.
  • Refill unit dose cassettes and prepare medication labels in a timely manner to maintain established delivery schedules.
  • Repackage medications following department policies and ensure all work is checked by a pharmacist before dispensing.
  • Refill automated dispensing units (including controlled medications), promptly reporting any discrepancies to the pharmacist and charge nurse.
  • Assist the pharmacist by screening phone calls, visitors, and handling missing dose information.
  • Prepare narcotics for automated dispensing units, patient-specific needs, and EMS kits, following safe handling protocols.

Sterile Compounding (IV Medications):

  • Prepare compounded sterile products (e.g., TPN, drug drips, epidurals, IVIG) under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, ensuring accuracy and aseptic technique.
  • Adhere to hand hygiene and garbing procedures in compliance with USP 797 standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness of sterile compounding environments and perform regular disinfection per hospital and industry guidelines.
  • Accurately perform mathematical calculations related to concentrations, doses, and drip rates.
  • Ensure timely preparation and delivery of compounded sterile products to maintain established schedules.

Chemotherapy Compounding:

  • Prepare chemotherapy medications according to USP 800 standards and hospital policies, ensuring accurate labeling, aseptic technique, and proper documentation.
  • Use closed system transfer devices (CSTDs) for chemotherapy preparations.
  • Demonstrate competency in chemotherapy calculations, including pump rates, bag volumes, and specific doses.
  • Participate in mock chemotherapy spill drills to ensure readiness for emergency situations.

Medication Distribution:

  • Ensure accurate and timely delivery of medications to patient care areas.
  • Conduct thorough checks of patient medication cassettes to ensure all required medications are properly transferred during cart exchanges.

Pharmacy Records & Inventory Management:

  • Update medication cassettes for patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Ensure accurate charging and crediting of patient medications based on cart fill lists.
  • Maintain proper inventory levels for controlled and non-controlled medications and supplies in the pharmacy area.

Quality Assurance & Maintenance:

  • Regularly inspect medication storage areas, identify outdated or unusable stock, and ensure proper disposal or recycling as per hospital protocols.
  • Maintain accurate temperature logs for refrigerator storage to ensure medication safety.

Professional Development & Compliance:

  • Maintain current New Hampshire Pharmacy Technician Registration and National Pharmacy Technician Certification.
  • Participate in pharmacy staff meetings and ongoing education to stay current with industry standards and hospital protocols.

Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Required: Minimum 1 year of experience as a hospital pharmacy technician.
  • Preferred: 1+ years of experience in sterile product preparation and chemotherapy compounding.

Education:

  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

Certifications/Training:

  • Required: Chemotherapy Certified Pharmacy Technician.
  • Preferred: Sterile Compounding Certified Pharmacy Technician.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in pharmacy automation and computer systems.
  • Strong mathematical skills for accurate medication compounding and dosing.
  • Knowledge of USP 797 (sterile compounding) and USP 800 (chemotherapy preparation) standards.
  • Excellent attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a high-pressure environment while maintaining patient safety.
