Compensation:

* Base Pay Range: $19.09 or $16.25 per hour, unit specific

* Shift Differentials: Additional $2.00 per hour for evening, night, and weekend shifts



ABOUT THE JOB

MU Health Care is offering a 12-week student nurse externship for nursing students who are within one year of graduating from an accredited nursing school. This program provides an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand professional experience.

Upon successful completion of the externship, nursing students may have an opportunity to continue as a senior student nurse extern and receive special consideration for graduate nurse (GN) positions.

GOALS

Provide nursing students with:

* An opportunity to increase nursing skills and knowledge through clinical practice with a professional nurse preceptor

* A role model for the practice of professional nursing

* Clinical experience to assist with the transition from student nurse to professional nurse

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION

Maintain a neat, clean patient environment. Maintain unit supplies, restocking as needed.

Promote and achieve satisfaction of internal customers. Effectively intercede with families and patients and resolve concerns if able, if not able consult with RN providing care to the patient.

Provides patient care and perform treatments following department policy, established protocol and clinical guidelines, or as directed by the RN/LPN including obtain and document vital signs, I&O, nutrition intake, height, weight, assist with feeding, turn/transfer patients, assist patients with elimination, assist patient or perform personal hygiene, change beds, obtain and deliver specimens, provide comfort measures, perform POC glucose testing, may perform venipuncture to obtain a blood sample.

Utilizes human and material resources in a cost-effective manner.

May complete unit/department specific duties as outlined in department documents.

IMPORTANT DATES AND DEADLINES

* Program Start Date: Tuesday, May 27, 2025

o Mandatory Orientation: Tuesday, May 27, through Thursday, May 29, 2025, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m

* Program Length: 12 weeks (10 weeks paid, 1-2 weeks unpaid vacation)

REQUIREMENTS

Be within one year of graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing

Completion of a Fundamentals of Nursing course from an accredited school of professional nursing

Demonstrate a GPA at or above 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Official transcripts will be required upon offer acceptance

* Reference Guidelines (5 total required):

o 2 current nursing instructors

o 2 nursing student peers

o 1 employer (current or past)

Participate in a phone interview with Human Resources and attend scheduled virtual, on-camera interviews with nursing leadership

Provide proof of active Basic Life Support certification through American Heart Association or American Red Cross

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and requires ambulating, reaching, and moving objects weighing up to and over 20 lbs.

This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
