We are looking for aPrincipalAnalystto focus on analysis and insights in the North American aluminium primary and recycled market.

Key role in the Market Analysis team and broader Commercial and Rio Tinto organization.

  • Principal Analyst requires an excellent understanding of the aluminium value chain, and market fundamentals that drive commodity prices.
  • Work closely within the Market Analysis team and with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Reporting to the Senior Manager, Market Analysis, of Aluminium, Alumina, Bauxite and Raw Materials.

This role is a great opportunity to join a high performing team and influence Group and Product Strategy, and support cash generation and business growth through Market Analysis. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Market Analysis of Aluminium, Alumina, Bauxite and Raw Materials, you will

  • Leverage your commodity market experience and networks to deliver insights on the North American aluminium primary and recycled market to the Commercial team, and the broader Group.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of the North American recycled market including generation, collection and consumption of manufacturing and obsolete scraps.
  • Research and broaden our understanding of all sectors that drive aluminium value-added products demand including the transport, building and construction, packaging, power, consumer durables and machinery sectors. Ultimately delivering a comprehensive outlook of the North American aluminium market.
  • Manage an extensive database on primary and secondary value-added-products capacity and production and monitor developments on projects.
  • Manage and develop our models on scrap supply and demand in North America.
  • Manage and develop our models on extrusions, rolled, rod and foundry capacity in North America.
  • Monitor, track and interpret North American aluminium trade flows.
  • Maintain and search for information on competitors financials and operating data.
  • Develop market narrative to present views internally, both in written form and verbally.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have the below experience

  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of North American market, with strong preference for experience in recycled aluminium.
  • Minimum 6 years relevant experience within a miner, trader, a bank, or commodity focused consultancy.
  • University degree in either economics, technical or commercial discipline.
  • Proven relevant experience and analytical skills with the ability to critically analyse data, identify trends and key market drivers.
  • Proven ability to present concepts and information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Economic modelling - econometric analysis an advantage.
  • Excellent IT skills including the use of MS Office and Power BI.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English) are essential.
