Stony Brook University: Provost Office: College of Arts & Sciences: Asian and Asian -American Studies Location Stony Brook University Open Date Jan 05, 2025 Deadline Feb 05, 2025 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time Description The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies (AAAS) at Stony Brook University, a flagship campus of the State University of New York system, seeks to appoint a full-time Lecturer in Hindi. The initial appointment, starting beginning of Fall semester 2025, is for two years, with the possibility of renewal. The successful applicant will be expected to teach Hindi language courses at all levels, for both heritage and non-heritage students, with the possibility of teaching courses in literature or linguistics. They will develop curricular and teaching materials, contribute to development of programs in teaching Hindi as a second language, conduct placement tests, train and supervise teaching assistants, and perform departmental committee service. They will be expected to work in close coordination with and contribute to the development of the Mattoo Center for India Studies. The New York metropolitan region has a dynamic Indian/South Asian community with numerous cultural resources and events. Stony Brook University's vibrant and nationally recognized Mattoo Center for India Studies sponsors a plethora of academic and cultural events. The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies offers a major and a master's program in Asian and Asian American Studies, a master's in History of Philosophy East and West, and a minor in South Asian Studies. Lecturers engage in teaching and service, and also have research opportunities. This position is non-tenure-track and the employment is for a 9-month service period, with the possibility of summer and winter teaching and participation in a Study Abroad program in India.
Established in 2002, the Department of Asian & Asian American Studies is one of the few departments in the U.S. that integrates the study and teaching of both Asian and Asian American studies. It offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that highlights the history of New York as the home of Asian immigrants since the 19th century and recognizes the importance of the Asia-Pacific in this present century. Using textual studies and discourse analysis as our primary analytic tools, we focus on the study of Asian and Asian American languages, cultures, and intellectual histories over time and in contact with other global cultures. Among our faculty are internationally-recognized scholars in linguistics, cultural studies, history, philosophy, and religious studies. Our global curriculum ranges from studies of classical Asian civilizations to studies of modern Asian diasporic cultures. We offer the following degree programs: MA in Contemporary Asian and Asian American Studies (CAASMA) MA "History of Philosophies East and West" (HPEW) B.A. in Asian & Asian American Studies B.A. in Asian & Asian American Studies with Teacher Certification (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean). We also offer the following minors: Asian & Asian American Studies, Asian American Studies, China Studies, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies, South Asian Studies, Religious Studies In addition, we offer study-abroad programs that provide unique opportunities for immersion in the languages and cultures of China, India, Japan and Korea.
