Westat is an employee-owned corporation providing research services to agencies of the U.S. Government, as well as businesses, foundations, and state and local governments. Westat's research, technical, and administrative staff of more than 2,000 is located at our headquarters in Rockville, Maryland, near Washington, DC.
Job Summary:
Westat is seeking interns to support IT Security Governance. This role offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in IT security governance while contributing to the organization's efforts to maintain a secure and compliant technology environment. The ideal candidate will work closely with the IT Security team to support governance initiatives, assist in policy development, and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
The duration of the internship is June 2, 2025, through August 15, 2025, working 40 hours/week.
This position has a flexible work arrangement schedule to work 2 days onsite at our corporate office in Rockville, MD.
Job Responsibilities:
* Policy and Procedure Support:
o Assist in drafting, reviewing, and updating IT security policies, standards, and procedures.
o Help maintain documentation related to security frameworks and controls.
* Compliance Monitoring:
o Support compliance efforts by conducting research and preparing documentation for audits and assessments.
o Assist in monitoring adherence to Federal security standards in NIST Special Publication 800-53 Revision 5, "Security and Privacy Controls for Federal Information Systems and Organizations".
* Risk Assessment:
o Participate in risk assessments by gathering and analyzing data.
o Help identify potential vulnerabilities and recommend mitigation strategies.
* Training and Awareness:
o Contribute to the creation and delivery of security awareness materials and programs.
o Support communication efforts to promote compliance and best practices.
Basic Qualifications:
* Students must be enrolled in an Associate or Bachelor's degree program or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience testing system security controls and determining security compliance with requirements.
* Familiarity with the software development lifecycle processes.
* Knowledge of information security principles, including risk assessment and management, threat and vulnerability management, incident response and identity and access management.
* Experience in developing, documenting and maintaining security procedures.
Other Required Qualifications:
* Must have an interest, and some experience (classwork and labs are acceptable) in IT security.
* Analytical, problem solving, detail-oriented mindset.
* Must have excellent communication skills, especially writing skills.
