What you'll do:

The Model Risk Management Senior Director leads Western Alliance Bank's Model Risk Management Group - a second line function primarily tasked with identifying, assessing, mitigating, and monitoring risks from the use of mathematical, statistical, and financial models. Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer, the Model Risk Management Senior Director manages a team of 5-15 risk professionals responsible for maintaining and executing the bank's oversight programs for models, simple analytical approaches, and critical spreadsheets. The Model Risk Management Senior Director is also responsible for chairing the bank's Model Risk Management Committee and acting as the central point of contact on Model Risk matters with regulators, external audit, internal audit, other second line functions, and the first line of defense.
  • Maintain policies, standards, and procedures for the oversight of models, simple analytical approaches, and critical spreadsheets.
  • Develop the Risk Appetite Statement for Model Risk and associated quantitative Key Risk Indicators.
  • Maintain model, simple analytical approach, and critical spreadsheet inventories.
  • Oversee the issue management process for Model Risk issue programs.
  • Review model validation activities, including ongoing monitoring, and associated reports.
  • Oversee the production of reporting on Model Risk matters and report on matters to the Model Risk Management Committee, Enterprise Risk Management Committee, and Director's Risk Committee.
  • Chair the Model Risk Management Committee and serve on other management committees, as needed.
  • Conduct enterprise-wide training on Model Risk programs and serve as the central point of contact on Model Risk matters with regulators, external audit, internal audit, other second line functions, and the first line of defense.
  • Lead and develop a team of 5-15 Model Risk professionals.

Provides supervision to and directs the activities of their employees; performs supervisory tasks such as performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and interviewing candidates for employment; develops work schedules; provides necessary training and coaching.

What you'll need:

  • PhD in Statistics, Economics or related field, combined with a technical BS engineering, statistics, operational research, mathematics, economics, or other quantitative field, plus 10 or more years of experience in analytics or quantitative modeling research with a leading financial services organization, consulting firm, or analytic solutions provider.
  • Advanced to Expert hands-on experience in technical model development and implementation, model validation, and/or model oversight in one or more of the following areas: credit risk, operational risk, asset & liability management, PD/LGD/EAD estimation, PPNR and capital stress testing. Knowledgeable of model risk management and associated regulatory requirements such as FRB SR 11-7 and DFAST and CECL.
  • Advanced to Expert knowledge of banking products, bank operational policies and practices, as well as banking regulatory agencies structures, practices, and span of control.
  • Advanced to Expert skills in data analysis and programming. Experience in SAS or Equivalent Programming, and SAS or Equivalent Modeling
