The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations. |
Posting Summary |
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Dispatcher (Buses) for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O).
Among the key duties are following:
- Monitors buses and vans through computerized system and dispatches according to schedule. Makes routing adjustments to accommodate schedule changes, peak load stops, transportation delays, bus breakdowns, etc.
- Informs drivers of adjusted routes, notifies proper authorities, and dispatches extra buses if necessary.
- Ensures that drivers meet schedules. Resolves, records, and notifies supervisor of passenger complaints.
- Conducts site review of campuses, reports traffic delays, and recommends detour routes.
- Monitors and updates a computerized bus tracking and reporting system.
- Records and maintains detailed data for daily, weekly, and monthly transportation reports.
- Runs daily reports and schedules and other reports as directed.
- Maintains daily and monthly records such as scheduled runs, number of vehicles, numbers of passengers, names of drivers, schedule adjustments, emergencies, etc, related to the inter-campus bus program and the Para-transit van service.
- Substitute-drives the Para-transit van when necessary.
- Provides information regarding transportation services and general information regarding the university, campuses, building locations, and scheduled special events and programs. Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- High school/vocational school education or equivalent.
|
Certifications/Licenses |
- Valid driver's license, two years of driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
|
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
- Ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats. Experience in mass transportation, bus, or truck fleet operations/dispatching helpful.
- Must be able to complete multiple tasks concurrently.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
- Must be able to communicate effectively.
- Must have effective client service skills and a high tolerance for frustrations and stress.
