Now accepting applications for the Spring 2025 Paramedic Trainee Program - starting May 2025 (new employee orientation / start date). This is a pipeline requisition for opportunities in the Hennepin EMS department.

The selection process will include a phone screen and interview with management. In addition, qualified candidates will be required to complete entry-level testing. Offers will be contingent upon successful completion of physical agility testing assessment and psychological evaluation (or MMPI), as well as Department of Human Services (MN) background results.
Schedule will primarily be days, but may include evening/night/weekend schedule based on department needs and availability.

This is a full-time position and is benefit-eligible.

Hennepin Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), a division of Hennepin County Medical Center, has openings for 20-22 Paramedic Trainees to start in January 2024.This posting serves as a Talent Pipeline for incoming EMTs who are interested in training to work as Paramedics for the Hennepin EMS department.

Hennepin EMS is an Urban/Suburban 9-1-1 Emergency Medical Services agency that handles approximately 85,000 calls for service each year from the citizens and visitors of Hennepin County, Minnesota. We are based at Hennepin County Medical Center in Downtown Minneapolis and serve 14 municipalities within Hennepin County, covering 266 square miles and a population of over 700,000. Hennepin EMS deploys ambulances throughout the communities we serve, utilizing an integrated Computer Aided Dispatch that incorporates Automatic Vehicle Location and Global Positioning Satellites to ensure the closest available ambulance is sent to all emergencies.
Our goal is to deliver quality service to our customers with a courteous and immediate response while modeling the highest standard for excellence in public safety.

SUMMARY

Responsible for attending and completing a CAAHEP accredited paramedic program through Hennepin EMS Education.

Under the supervision of a Hennepin EMS preceptor is responsible for providing Basic and Advanced Life Support to sick and injured persons at emergency scenes and during transport to a health care facility. Upon successful completion of the paramedic program, employees may be eligible for promotion to paramedic.

Qualified candidates will receive directions for the screening process and a timeline of steps via email. Upon accepting the position, the candidate will be required to sign an agreement to work for Hennepin EMS for 3 years after completing paramedic training.

RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Attend and complete paramedic didactic and clinical education equal to 40 hours per week for the duration of the program
  • Follow policies as outlined in the Paramedic program manual
  • Follow and maintain professional standards and appropriate conduct as outlined in the HHS policies
  • Upon completion of Paramedic program, must pass NREMT Paramedic exam within 3 attempts in 60 days
  • Obtain and maintain Minnesota EMSRB Paramedic certification immediately upon NREMT Paramedic certification


Under qualified supervision must:



  • Respond to all requests for emergency medical services as directed
  • Respond to events such as multiple alarm fires, helicopter landings, hazardous incidents, FAA emergencies, and water emergencies
  • Assess nature and extent of illness or injury and determine appropriate emergency medical procedures
  • Administer basic life support techniques using accepted standards of patient care
  • Administer advanced life support techniques under the written patient care protocol or in direct radio contact with a physician
  • Perform extrication and rescue of victims
  • Acts as a team leader when dealing with emergency responses including the direction of First
  • Responders to facilitate patient care and transport
  • Function effectively in assigned role under the Incident Response Plan
  • Complete thorough documentation of all emergency runs and patient contacts as directed
  • Operate emergency vehicle to transport sick and injured persons to and from a health care facility
  • Operate emergency medical equipment and communications equipment
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain classrooms, clinical sites, emergency vehicle, supplies, and assigned equipment
  • Assist in keeping ambulance facilities clean and orderly
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports according to department standards
  • Attends all mandatory continuing education and required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job related hazards
  • Follows the hospital and department exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment with an emphasis on customer service
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives
  • Performs other duties as assigned after appropriate training

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education / Work Experience:



  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be a high school graduate or have a GED
  • Complete FISDAP entrance exam with a score of 70% or higher in all subjects


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Six (6) months of experience as an emergency medical technician with a licensed ambulance service


OR



  • One (1) year of experience as an emergency medical technician in a hospital emergency department


License / Certifications



  • Currently certified in AHA CPR for Healthcare Providers
  • Currently certified NREMT Basic and Minnesota EMSRB
  • Must have a valid driver's license or state equivalent and must have a satisfactory driving record including no more than two moving violations in the past three years of licensure
